When we adopted him he was a inside outside cat so keeping him in the house is not an option.

I'm afraid there's nothing you can do, cats are hunters, it's just what they are. It's their instinct.

Why is it not an option? Eventually, when he learns that he's not going outside, he will stop trying to get out and be perfectly happy indoors.

If you insist on letting him outside, the only thing you can do is put a bell on his collar to scare away the birds before he's able to catch them. Remember that hunting is a cat's natural instinct. You can't "make" him stop.

They sell collars with a bell attached to them. When he moves to go chase a bird, the bell sounds which warns the birds.

My cat loves to catch and eat the birds bringing me every morning a dead bird's head or a dead garden snake.

Put a little bell on his collar. It will warn the birds. We did this to mine, it worked for a while. He became a really good hunter. But it will warn birds for a while

I have found that a small bell on the collar works well.

I guess you could make him stop being a cat. Seriously, that's what cats do!

You can't except by keeping him in. Hunting is natural to him and that's what he is going to do.
