I want to be a doctor, but I also want to be a businessman. I realize that this is typical for someone thinking about what to do, but I feel locked in that I want to be both of them.

Would it be realistic to become a doctor while managing businesses? (restaurants, clubs, etc.)

Or, should I become soley a doctor or business man. Which one would you prefer?

If you beleive you can do both, then do both. But don't do either one half way. If your business isn't doing as well as your practice, give up the business. Doctors are needed much more than just another business. If you're lucky, you can hire someone to run that business for you and you focus on your practice.

Unless you can find a health-related business, the only way to do both, as far as I can see, is to run your own clinic or office. Or, become a doctor and work your way up to hospital administrator. Trying to do both will be too much stress. Remember, you'd probably be on-call for both, and odds are you'll run into more than one situation where you're needed at both at the same time. One or the other would suffer, and ultimately, you'd have to choose. Try imagining your life without one, then the other, and that should help you realize which is your true passion.

Doctors don't typically have a lot of spare time to do things like manage other businesses. And you'd have to devote about 10 years full time just for the education and training to become a doctor.

It's more realistic to choose one or the other. Not that it's totally impossible to do both, but it's not very practical.

I think it would be very difficult to be a doctor and businessman. First of all, when you are an intern, you are forced to sometimes work a day or two without breaks. You could always work up to owning your own practice. It really depends on what you would rather do. Both involve a lot of money to be put in but there is the possibility of getting big paychecks from both too.

It is not realistic to expect to be able to do both early in your career, if at all. Maybe when you have established a good practice and have the money to open your own restaurants/clubs, you would be able to find some time to manage them part-time with the help of a full time manager.

business only takes 4 years of college and 2 years of grad school.....becoming a Dr. (as in MD) you will need the 4 years of college and 8 years of internship/grad school....do the math. Or get your doctorate in business....you'll be a Dr....just not an MD

you should become a doctor and go over to iraq to help the young men and women who have been crippled and torn apart by IEDs, this way you can be part of this war you so staunchly support, and can practice your love for medicine.

You need to focus on one or the other and stay focused, if you feel you aren't going to cut the grade on a profession you had in mind, change course and go with plan B

Do both if you feel the desire. Just be fully aware you are going to have some hefty student loans when you get done with school.
