In answering late - it really depends on what you feed, how much you feed, and where you buy. I have 2, 80 pound dogs - the younger gets around 2lbs a day whereas the older dog gets about 1 1/2 lbs of food a day - soon to be taken down to 1 1/4 lbs for winter. the health benefits far outweigh the cost for me. other benefits are my dogs don't stink, skin/fur or breath. teeth are always clean, coat soft and shiny, no big sticky/mushy poop to deal with. I probably spend about $100 a month on food for my dogs. They actually don't eat $100 worth of food a month. I fill my freezer on a monthly basis so they will never run out of food. Although I get most of my meat between $ .50 and .99 per pound I do buy a variety of not-so-common things to feed them that may cost a little more than a $1 a pound.

Is your golden retriever a lean 80-85 pounds or does he have some fat on him. If you can feel his ribs fairly easily when rubbing his sides, and if when you look at him from above he has a "waist" he is in good weight. Whatever you're feeding him now is just right for his level of activity. If, however, he has no waist, and fat deposits near the base of the tail etc. he's overweight and should be cut back. You should make sure that the hair on your golden doesn't deceive you.The long coat can hide fat as easily as it hides thin. My rhodesian ridgebacks are quite lean hounds and weigh 65 and 71 pounds each. One is 24" tall at the shoulder, the other 26". They eat 12 oz. of dry dogfood, twice a day during the summer months. During the winter when it's cold and they expend calories staying warm, they get 14-16 oz. of dry food twice a day. I feed a good quality dog food called Canidae which contains human grade meat and rice. You can see them in my avatar.

Its best to go by what your dog food bag says to feed.

At that age they should only get one bowl of food a day.

Depends on if he is neutered, how much exercise he gets, what kind of food, his personal metabolism and if he lives inside all the time.
