if you don't have papers then there is absolutely no way of telling.

When you bought him, he should have come with a Kennel Club registration and a pedigree certificate if he is a pedigree.

However that depends on where you purchased him from. If it was an animal shelter, they should have told you what breed he was if a pedigree. If you found him as a stray then of course it is more difficult to tell.

What breed does he most resemble? If you can identify a breed you could always ask a breeder of the breed he most looks like if he is a pedigree.

As a general rule a pedigree dog will cost you in the hundreds from a breeder, or between £50-£100 from an animal shelter, a mongrel/cross breed will cost considerably less. Does that help?

Stop me because I know I'm being mean but you would say "with" and know what a pedigree looks like at least if you had bought one.
I know it sounds harsh but a decent breeder of pedigree dogs would not sell to someone who is ignorant of the dog's needs, let alone unable to say even what breed of dog it is.

Pedigreed does not mean purebred. A pedigree is a list of ancestors..a family tree..even mutts have family trees tho they were generally lost in the forest. You can generally tell if your dog is PUREBRED by comparing it to pics of top show dogs of the breed and the breed standard. AKC breed standars are on the www.akc.org site..

There is hardly such thing as a pure pedigree anymore but if he has no papers he is not classed as pedigree even if he is. It depends on what breed of dog for clues on if they are pedigree. My dog is registered as pedigree but she is not pure pure staff because pure staffies are all one colour and have no blazes whereas my dog does.

you can mostly tell if a dog is PUREBRED- however pedigree is the listing of its parents and ancestors which you will likely not be able to ascertain. Posting a picture will allow people to give you an idea of what breed(s) they think it is

If your dog is indeed a pedigree it would have the appropriate
paperwork stating the blood line and parentage from the
breeder when you purchased it.

In general, if you didn't get AKC or UKC registration papers from the breeder when you got it, it's not pedigreed.
