Is it a color picture or black and white?
I say just go with what you normally wear...You want it to look natural, don't you?
I guess it depends on where the picture is being taken.

I have seen some great engagement photos that were taken in odd places...say a minature golf course, go carts, musems.
I think you should pick a place that represents you as a couple and then decide what to wear based on that. If you are causal people it would look strange if you were really formal, if you tend to be very stylish then continue that.
I wouldnt match clothes specifically just be concious of what you are wearing and how it looks together. Oh and dont were too much red (clothes or lipstick) shows up as blakc in Black and white pics.

My Fiance and I took some engagement photos and we had two different outfits to change into. The first set we wore matching light green polos and jeans, and the second outfit we each wore something that we felt looked good on us and would compliment each other. I think that engagement photos should be casual because your wedding photos will be formal. So let people see the fun side of the lucky couple!

we wore dark jeans, boots, not matching tops but similar colors, I wore a cream sweater he wore a charcoal sweater and I wore charcoal and pink scarf. The colors looked great together. This was winter and outside with snow on the ground.
One thing I wish we would have done was (if I could have gotten him to wear a scarf), I wish he would have worn one too because the photographer did some great things with leaving everything black and white and leaving the scarf pink and if he would have had one too (not pink) then that would have looked even better. So maybe you can find one cute unisex accessory that you both could wear and have the photographer do that.

We did two sets. Both times we were dark jeans and nice tops. The first time, I wore a brown top and he wore ivory (he didn't want to match). I actually think this one turned out nice, rather than being too matchy.
Your level of how casual really depends on the location.

Sometimes it looks silly when couples match but that's just me. That said, when we got our engagement prints done, I wore a light green shirt and my fiance wore a darker green one. It turned out really well.
However, I really like white shirts in engagement prints. I think they look classy, cute, and stylish. My opinion is you can't go wrong with nice button-up white shirts!

You could take the photo of you two doing something you both enjoy... playing music, riding motorcycles..cooking...something that is meaninginful to you both then you could wear clothes accordingly.
you could also do the normal jeans and long sleeve shirts with no shoes in a outdoorsy location.
If you have the photos printed in black and white or sepia that makes a big difference and can almost make photos look more "romantic" in my opinion.
I dunno sound slike fun!

First of all, I think it should be kind of formal (semi-formal?). I think you should wear your favorite colors - or perhaps your wedding colors. Matching is OK but don't try to be to "cutesy" about it. I think you should wear things that make you happy and look like you're celebrating something.

A sundress for you and button down and khakis for him; a bit elegant but not too formal.
