Yesterday I went in for a job interview, I did really well, however they started to tell me all of this information that did not sound like the job I had applied for. If I get the job, I don't know how to properly turn it down. What do I say?

Curious Canadian is spot on ... having worked in positins where I've had to hire (and fire) people, the straightforward, but polite, approach works best every time.

Who knows, that firm may one day have another job that is just what you DO want, and you can't go back there if you've been rude or thoughtless.

Taking the time to thank the people who've interviewed you and let them know, even before they advise a decision, is always a good move.

You could add that while you would have liked to work for the organisation, it is the role which you feel would not be a good match.

Best wishes! :-)

There are two ways you can go about this. You can reply by e-mail with a note thanking them for their time and consideration. I would also say that regretablly you must turn down the opportunity to interview tomorrow for the ........ position. I wish you continued success and luck in filling this position. On the other hand, you could go even though the job is not something you want to do. If they like you and make an offer, you would turn it down, but it they liked you enough they may try to find something more suited to your wants within the company.

Be honest and professional. If the job offer comes to you via telephone then you have to tell that person that you felt from the interview that you might not be the right person for that job, and you wouldn't wish to waste their time and effort to make room for the wrong person, hence they should continue to interview and you thank them for their consideration and time.

Thank them for the offer and tell them that you are very flattered. However after careful consideration, you have decided look for an opportunity that is a better match. If you think that they will not be satisfied with that answer, tell them that you have accepted another offer.

Thank you very much but I have to decline. It wasn't what I had in mind and I'd like to pursue other options.

P.S. I very rarely hear back from a person who doesn't want to work for me so I am glad that someone has the manners you do - feel a fool having to call them and ask them why they haven't phoned!

Say, "Thank you very much for your offer, but this isn't the job I thought it was. I'm afraid I'll have to turn this offer down."

Never burn bridges. If they call, you can explain your intention to them. If they notify you in writing, take the time to write a very brief response. Tell them thanks for considering you for the position but you have decided to pursue another opportunity. That's all you need to say.
