If you take something that doesn't belong to you, it's still theft whether or not the property is returned. Someone can still be charged and convicted.

Yes, stealing is stealing, but if caught, will look better in the eyes of the judge that they returned it without being caught first. And hopefully they learned a lesson. Also, every word of every sentence does not need to be in caps.
Just thought I would save your shift key a bit of extra wear and tear.
Oh, explain? "Something else" would be borrowing, and that is done with permission before the item is removed . If friend didn't have permission, it was indeed stealing.

OK- clear this up for me:

Something was taken without permission or knowledge of the rightful owner, then returned...

why should returning it cancel out the crime? If you,er, your friend were caught, in addition to any punishments levied, the property would have to be returned anyway.
The Eighth Commandment has been broken.

Kids these days..... flexible morals and poor punctuation, to boot. Sheesh.

Yes, taking property that does not belong to you without permission or authorization is stealing. You can rationalize all you like. "oh, nobody saw, I returned it, it was not damaged", but the fact is your "friend" committed anything from misdemeanor petty larceny (regardless of intent to return), up to felony grand theft.

Don't be stupid, the judge will not care about what you planned to do with the item after you were done with it.

Any time you take something which does not belong to you without permission, it is stealing. He made restitution by returning it, but the act was stealing.

Yes is is stealing. It is likely charges will not be pursued if he returned the item on his own and showed remorse.

Bringing the item back does not erase the crime of theft....it may help to reduce the punishment, but doest absolve them of the crime

yes it is theft. it looks good for you if you get caught that you returned it under your own conscience.
