You are suppose to change your toothbrush often, so by the dentist giving out a toothbrush when you go in he insures that you are at least changing toothbrushes every six months. Also the toothbrushes you get at a dentist office usually are very good ones, and the same that you can buy at a store, they are just cheaper for the office to buy them in bulk then for you to get them at the store.

It's a gift!

No, really, most dentists give toothbrushes to their patients, firstly, as a gift. But, more importantly, they want to make sure that you use the proper size and bristle texture.

So many people think that a hard bristle brush is good for their teeth... really scrub them. This is the WORST thing that you can use on your teeth.

Too hard a bristle can actually do major damage to both the teeth and the gums. Only a soft bristle brush should be used... ever!

So, when your dentist gives you a brush when you have your next cleaning and exam, just say "Thank you".

Actually, it depends on the brand. Our office gives out the Colgate toothbrushes. These are the same as you can get in the store. Exactly the same.
We give them out to help the patients. Why make them go to the store every three months for a toothbrush when we can get them from us? We buy them at a discounted price?

No, the Dentists have dental vendors that provide them with hundreds of tooth brushes as give aways (often with small tubes of tooth paste and floss.)

Your dentist probably gives out what he/she prefers you to use (like Oral B). Mine gives me a little goodie bag with an Oral B brush and little flosses and tiny toothpaste tubes (also brand name, like Crest, etc.)
That way you'll know what to shop for. The ones they give out should be readily available at the store.
If they're trying to give you brushes that are ONLY available at their office, I'd be suspicious that they'd be trying to mark up the prices and overcharge you for something you can't buy at Walmart.

My dentist gives away toothbrushes that have his name/phone # on them.

Kind of a subliminal advertising scheme.

Sublingual.

Whatever.
