I am a Christian, and PLEASE don't take this question in an offensive way- I am just curious. Most people that I have talked to say it is not a belief. You can have the belief that there is no God, can't you?

Yes, you are correct. Athiesm is a belif, and they dont know it ,but it is a belief in following the devil. Cuz, God says we either follow jesus or the devil. IF we dont choose Jesus, we are automatically serving the devil, whetehr we know it or not. So it is not only a belief , but a religion, whether they know it or not. This is in the bible, all can read that for themsevles.
Great question

There is a difference between some atheists, sometimes called strong and weak athiests, its like glass is half empty not half full type of thing.

A Weak Atheist is one with a lack of belief in God/Gods.

A Strong Atheist is one who believes there is no God/Gods.

The difference while small, can be significant as one atheist may argue something differently to another, leading to an apparent inconsistency in beliefs which most other religious people don't understand.

And in case you were wondering, Atheism is not a religion or a "faith" (in fact Atheism doesn't require any Faith at all), which some might confuse belief with.

Atheism by definition is no belief in any deity. So by definition, atheism is not a belief system. To say it is would be to skew the meaning of the word belief. It is not that someone believes there is no god, it is that someone has no belief in god.
To put this in perspective, I will turn the argument around. I could say that Christians are atheists because they have no belief that there is no god, but that would be skewing the meaning of belief too.
To sum, theists have belief in a deity, atheists do not. On the belief scale, theists may range from above zero to infinity, and atheists are always at zero.

The word ‘atheism’ comes from the negative ‘a,’ which means ‘no,’ and ‘theos,’ which means ‘god.’ Hence, atheism, in the most basic terms, means ‘no god.’ Basically, atheism is the lack of belief in a god and/or the belief that there is no god. By contrast, theism is the belief that there is a God, that he is knowable, and that he is involved in the world. Most atheists do not consider themselves anti-theists, but simply non-theists.

I've encountered many atheists who claim that atheism is not a belief system, while others say it is. Since there is no official atheist organization, nailing down which description of atheism to use can be difficult. Nevertheless, following are some definitions offered by atheists. Whichever definition you go by, atheism denies God.

"An atheist is someone who believes and/or knows there is no god."
"An atheist lacks belief in a god."
"An atheist exercises no faith in the concept of god at all."
"An atheist is someone who is free from religious oppression and bigotry."
"An atheist is someone who is a free-thinker, free from religion and its ideas."

The fact is that they still have a belief. Their Belief is that there is no religion and no God. Even though it's not a belief in a religion it is still a belief and from some of the Atheist I have encountered I have found many are very passionate about their beliefs. Just as passionate as we religious types are about ours.;)

Someone CAN have the belief that there is no god. Most atheist, however, made a logical choice. Most of us studied and thought about the issue before coming to the conclusion that there is no god.

I have come to the conclusion that there is no god. When someone says you believe in something, you base your understand on that belief. When your understanding comes from analysis, you reach a conclusion. Sure you believe the conclusion to be true but that belief is not the basis of you understanding.

Of course they have beliefs. Usually, their doctrines come from science, and the belief that man can evolve to a greater position than at the present.
They have answers for everything. Therefore, they MUST have beliefs.

I think atheism is the lack of belief. So I can't believe that my non-believing is a belief.

Instead of saying "I believe there's no God" I prefer "I DON'T believe in a God". It's a lack of belief in any deities...period.

Oh and it's not a religion either.
