i usually go with dry food because boba gets mad farts if he eats wet food. Also i throw in a can of tuna to split every once in a while....i know they're spoiled.

To Ryan's list I would add: Eagle Pack, Nature's Logic, Natural Balance, Felidae, CA Natural, Wellness, Blue Buffalo. They have good canned foods too.

Royal Canin Indoor is probably the best for the type of cat you describe. There's also one for weight management if that becomes an issue. I have a maine coone and there is a formula specifically for her as well. Let me warn you though: none of the Royal Canin foods are cheap!
Nutro Max is a little less expensive but also pretty good.
Iams is okay, but I've read the ingredient list and it's not that great. Better than Purina maybe. The fact is that IAMS, Science Diet and Purina are all processed and made by the same company. That came out with all the animals dying recently.
AND ... MEALS are NOT good in pet food. They are put there to make the pieces of food bigger so it seems like you are getting more. And if it says "chicken meal by-product"... then there may be a little chicken in the meal, a lot, or none at all! They can just use chicken broth to make it! Or they can use meat to make it and then strain out the meat and reuse it.
ANY good trainer/veterinarian can tell you this! Meals are basically like a cereal. And where would a cat or dog get cereal in the wild??????

Canned food, preferably a good quality one. See the What to feed link for suggestions, or you can try Nature's Variety Instincts or By Nature Organics.
Even supermarket brands such as Friskies or Fancy Feast would be an improvement over dry foods.

I have two cats, Tigger (10) and Molly (2). Molly got the kitten stuff for the first two months here but the 19 year old Misty kept eating that instead of the normal stuff of Iams in the orange bag. When Misty passed on, we got rid of the kitten stuff and put the normal stuff out and they've been fine with it. Molly will even come running when she hears that the food bowl is being refilled. It's so cute! ;) It's all on your preference, i suppose. Here in my house, we don't follow the feeding instructions. We just leave a bowl out all the time and makes sure that it's still got food in it.

There are many brands out there that are really good. Iams is not one of them. Go with Royal Cannin, Solid Gold, Nutro Natural Choice or Nutro Ultra. These are greats foods that do not contain by-products like Iams and Purina.

Iams is a good food - however there has been some question of their use of a certain perserative which i cant spell off hand lol. The best foods for animals is the dry kind as you are feeding them a measured amount of food and not just all the water that is in canned foods. Congratz on choosing high quality food and not generic ( see the question on here called whats in your pets food)

Iams is a good brand of food, it's high quality and cats and dogs seem to really like it.
I'm not crazy about Purina, mostly because they make Felix and, while this food can be OK for some cats, it can be lousy for those prone to weight gain. Ive yet to meet a cat or dog who hasn't done great on Iams.
I also like Hills Science Diet and Royal Canin foods. As long as you're staying away from supermarket brands like Felix, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Sheba, Meow Mix - this stuff can be OK, but I don't bother using it myself anymore because there are so many other brands that are better.

EDIT: As for 'by-products' there seems to be a lot of confusion about that - 'chicken meal' for instance would not be a by-product. The inclusion of cereals in cat/dog food is also not indicative of low quality food - cereals have their place in petfood, they're there to mimic the indigestible skin and cartilage animals would otherwise consume from whole carcasses.

Most cats prefer wet food to dry, but dry food is more versatile and cheaper. If they are hungry enough they will eat anything you put down for them. Just make sure that it is far enough away from people so they will not feel threatened.

Stay away from name brand pet foods, because most of them such as purina and iams and especially science diet is made with horse meat and is processed with chemicals! we personally found a small buisness that carries natural food, this will make your cat healthier and live longer!

i don't feed my dog (i know you said cat, but hear me out) anything but all natural holistic food. i buy it at trader joe's. they also have feline food by the same brand. if you have a trader joe's near you, i'd try it. i think that it leaves the animal's skin, coat & eyes much shinier and healthier. i recommend it for any pet.
