George, I would try to be brief though I see you so really lost I understand your doubts as genuines.
The link is not "casual" between the death of Jesus and the forgiveness of the sins.
In a verybarbaric world was a stunning attitude to come to this world, has a real philosophy, quite new... things you had got used to it cause Jesus brought them like relate to God father just speaking, feeling, confesing, regreting and loving.
The same, in times, like today the muslims, wanting to behead, kill, rape and destroy everything that looks different, he brought for the first time the words, rights, equality, humanity.
So the forgiveness of the sins, is when you are still in your limitations trying to get better, and repent from your mistakes, Jesus came to show us that he was not just as Mohamed giving you a recipe for you and having another recipe for himself, or like many roman emperors, Jesus showed that he was eager, ready and willing to die for his thoughs, for his father and for us, to show us the way. And he changed "humanity" forever, without killing anybody, not interested in building a church or to deal with power, not to enjoy the "good things of life".
I don't understand the last part of your statement but I hope you understand that the example Jesus brought to this world is the one of the very evolved man, religious, with dignity, independient of materialism, power, fame, politics and this example had changed also the laws, the sense of justice and the "theorical way" humans we should relate to each other.
If we are able to aply it until certain point of our lives being so imperfects, that is another story where Jesus is not responsible, he made his job perfectly, with no stain, with love and with no other interest that the evolution of the human race.
I am a Christian, Jesus had made 2 proved miracles to me among of many other ones, still, you will see me here and in London loosing sometimes my cool with Islam, Mohamed and muslims... I just do what I can, but after you deal with people is still when your understanding of the mission of Jesus becomes even more clear and the degree of difficulty he faced 21 centuries ago and still be able to change the world leave no doubt of his infinite ability and love for humans.
Whether Jesus went to heaven in flesh, or Mary was virgin after labor... whether he told or not he is the son of God, is not relevant at all, doesn't change anything.
In the same almost universal concept of Heaven Jesus brought, I am sure Jesus is sitting at the right side of God.
I don't see any cowardice on Christianity, I see a lot of bravery, I had never seen a christian taking women and children as human shields and if certainly the Catholic church CENTURIES AGO made serious mistakes according to the world by then you never can attribute these faults to Jesus.
Not Jesus, nor the Bible support the mistakes of christians, and usually other christians are the first one to jump and fight, very different of other religions stories we see even this days in 21st century,

According to Mosaic law, an eye was needed for an eye. Adam was perfect, and he sinned. The devil made an argument that ALL humans would sin against him. To test this theory, another man was needed, of perfect blood, to show the world and the heavens that humans could live and do the will of God. However there were no perfect humans on the earth, and as it was foretold in the first prophecy in Genesis, the 'seed' or Jesus would come and set things straight. This will never have to be proven again. Once again, no imperfect mortal could be tried against Adams perfect blood.

If you had a child who was terminally ill and you were told that there was something inside of you that could cure the child, but it would end up killing you, would you not sacrifice your life for your own flesh and blood? That's what God did for us, by sending His only Son into the world for us to slaughter Him. And that very same God forgives us for it every time because the 'spirit is willing but the flesh is weak'. When Jesus was resurrected from the dead, He became the 'first of many' so that we too could have eternal life.

It's a case of 'greater love has no man than he lays down his life for another'
Jesus came to show us the way to live, but he was put to death, that was the fault of the Romans and some Jews of the time.
He did not bring it on himself.
The rest ,you better ask God.

Jesus is not God or God's son
Jesus was a prophet of God same as all the other prophets .....
God Created Jesus same like Adam who was created without a father even without a mother .... nobody consider Adam son of God

Ever since the Protestant Reformation, there has been a gross misunderstanding of the atonement. I very heartily recommend this article:
