Some people need to be saved from their ridiculous fears for ancient mythological stories.
If a child is afraid of some monster on the other side of the room after you've switched off the light and closed the door, you say: there is no monster in the room, it's some faint light from outside striking some poster or some dots on the wallpaper. After that the child can sleep better.
Religion is a kind of childish fear that has grown into adulthood, because in the early days of human thinking people were looking for explanations for their being, the world, the sky and everything that comes with it. Today we know so much more, and that knowledge can bring much good to the earth and humanity in the future (if handled well). But religious people want to obstruct that process and dictate their truth to scientists, like it happened until 400 years ago, when humanity still lived in their own sh*t all over the world, wondering where those rats and ugly diseases came from. If it were for the church in those days, it had never been found out. But with the church in power again, the clock could start ticking backwards again too.
Religious people also keep breeding in unbelievably large numbers, because of the bible tells them so, while the world can't handle much more people.
Religion brings hell to earth, because the different versions are always more likely to compete than to cooperate, and their "holy" books even preach to convert/fight/kill each other. But those who don't want to have anything to do with religion at all, atheists like me, will be fried first.
Religious people who think they will be beamed up soon will do not much to prevent disasters from happening, or maybe even provoke them, like a big (nuclear) war in the Middle East.

Are you for real? Have you any idea how many Pagans, Wiccans, Agnostics, Muslims, Jews and other non-Christians you are speaking to besides atheists? Or are you really as arrogant as your question makes you out to be?

I have NEVER, EVER heard an atheist trying to 'convert' people to atheism because atheism is NOT a religion; it is a lack of belief in deities. Believe in whatever you want. Just don't shove it down my throat, or tell me I'm going to some fictional hell for not believing as YOU do because it says so in one of the many books that say the exact same thing in different ways for different religions.

I sure hope you're kidding. If not, I advise you to educate yourself more on non-theism:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism

EDIT: As for the ever-insufferable Tuberoot, saying that it is 'religious' somehow to not believe in deities is like saying it is religious to not believe in the Tooth Fairy. That girl/guy disgusts me to my very core. He doesn't understand faith or religion. NOT believing in something is NOT faith. Tuberoot is the kind of person who believes what is in the Creation Museum even though there is ABSOLUTE proof against it. It's stupidity, the way he thinks. Sorry. Not in the mood for his ignorance-spewing this evening. Atheists do not 'act' like any religion. We have no temples or churches or mosques. If any of us get together it is usually because we are disgusted by the amount of hatred and killing that goes on in this country in the name of religion. THAT is why we are here every day. This is not a forum for the religious only - it is a forum to discuss religion and the effect it has on the world every single day. To be in denial about something first you know it has to be a real thing, otherwise it isn't denial, it is understanding. Tuberoot doesn't even know the meaning of holiness. I used to call myself an agnostic-atheist because I thought it meant you could be both spiritual and not believe in gods. I was wrong. WIki was misleading. Weak atheism allows for a sense of something beyond science. I am a proud atheist and a proud humanist. And if Jesus was a kind, compassionate and tolerant man, he wouldn't even accept Tuberoot into his circle of pity-friends.

No, I am not.

I don't talk about my atheism unless I am asked a direct question. I always make it clear that I am talking about my personal beliefs. I am clear about the logic I used to come to those beliefs. If you feel like people are pushing you, maybe your faith isn't as strong as you think it is.

For the record, when I say that Christians are "pushing" their beliefs, I mean the "moral" laws Christians support, the teaching of Intelligent Design, and inclusion of prayer in public schools.

I don't give a rats @ss what you believe. Just keep it to yourself.

I have never told anyone that! Wow. I really don't care if someone believes in a supreme being. What I care about is a person's behavior. Are you caring? Gracious? Respectful? Those are things I care about.

Believe what you want to believe but the moment you start pushing your beliefs on me is the moment I push back fast and hard.

Atheists try to convince Christians to renounce their ways the way emergency workers try to talk people out of jumping off buildings.

But it is not so much Christians in general as it is the irrational fundamentalists who oppose reason, science and human rights - those who want to enforce there views on all others through theocracy. It those who prove a danger to other people's welfare and the American way of life.

I don't tell people that they should become an atheist. I don't even answer questions that say "christians only". Everyone should find their own path to whatever belief they hold. I did which is why I'm an atheist.

i think ur misunderstanding.

most atheists dont tell you that you need to believe atheism or else. christians do this.

atheists merely state points against christianity and other religions.
and in all honesty, ive never been approached by an atheist at my house or on the street or in the mall, and have to listen to them explain what they believe... cant say the same about christians.

christians lack respect towards their fellow humans as well.

When we say not to push beliefs, we mean in the public sphere.

Message boards devoted to debating religion are another matter. Books about the subject are another matter.

You don't see atheists handing on tracts on the street. You don't see atheists distributing flyers in schools telling people not to go to church. You don't see atheists telling our children to recite a pledge that "we are one nation, under Bertrand Russell."
