cupcakes and muffin turrets are good choices for a wedding cake, also I've been to a wedding in which cherry tarts were towered instead of a cake and it looked really amazing.

Well most people have given you some fantastic suggestions already so I will just tell you what we are doing. We are having a French wedding cake. It is basically a tower of cream puffs covered in either toffee of chocolate. You could have a fruit salad to go along with it or some poached fruit. my friend is making our one.

I can't believe the people who are dissing you for not having a cake. It's YOUR darn wedding and you guys can do what you want. People get so caught up in what the wedding industry image is of a wedding and don't see the true point of one - to share a beautiful day and food with your nearest and dearest.

Good luck and all the best!

This is still a cake idea, but something different.....

A friend of ours got married and they had a "naked wedding cake" No frosting. It was layered/tiered just like a traditional wedding cake and in between each layer was beautiful fresh berries. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries & blackberries. Most of the layers just had the berries piled on, but a couple layers had a layer of what looked to be whipped cream. It was so simple, pretty and fresh looking (and tasting)

Other than that I think an ice cream make would be neat if you could coordinate it just right so it didn't melt all over. The down side to that is that you would not be able to have it displayed.

Go to a local, fancy bakery- I bet they have tons of non-traditional ideas! :)

OK so I'm not a big cake fan either. We were going to forgo the cake and have a lavish fruit display (healthier too). But seriously, people got up in arms about wedding cake. My future sister in law said she will not be in the wedding the there is not cake (kidding of course) and my stepmom screamed "you're not having cake!!!" and the same reaction from lots of other wedding VIPs. The cakies really love their cake. So we're doing a very small cutting cake, then sheet cakes (cheaper) and a tuxedo strawberry for everyone.

I was at wedding where to cut a big cookie and served everyone else sheet cake.

You could really do anything you want, just cut it up in little individual servings and decorate! cheesecake, hohos, smores...

You get sick of cake pretty quick.. We are only doing a grooms cake in cake.. The wedding cake is going to be cheese cakes.. You could always do your favorite deserts...

I actually went to a wedding where the bride and groom both hated cake so they did an ice cream sundae bar. Right now there are trends towards candy stations and dessert stations with eclairs, canollis etc. I've actually come across some pretty cool donut "cakes" as well if you like donuts.

You could do what ever you want. I've been to weddings where cheese cake was served (yummy), where pie was served because the groom hated cake, and one where Creme Brulee was served because it was the bride's favorite thing in the world.

You could do mousse, tiramisu, tarts, hot fudge sundaes or dessert crepes.

Any dessert would be fine, but you may want to offer a simple cake as an option in case there are people there for the cake.lol.

Have an assortment of deserts, do a small wedding cake like 2 tiers just for doing the cutting ceremony and then suggest the guests eat the cake and you guys have assorted stuff to go along with it. :) Or how about having mini wedding cakes on each table another idea is this

Tiered Puddings and Mousses
Pre-chill wine or champagne glasses, and fill with:

*Chocolate, chocolate orange, lemon mousse
*Rice, coconut rice or wild rice pudding
*Raspberry, hazelnut or regular tiramisu
*White chocolate, key lime, blackberry or biscotti parfaits
*Heavy whipped cream, topped with sweet in-season berries
If your budget's ample, you can also stack up individual-sized.
Do all the same selection or mix them up for color and variety!

Tiered Pastries
Cream puffs are king--and for good reason. Remember that cream puffs don't have to be round; you can use cookie cutters to fashion them into lots of creative shapes. You can also go beyond them and stack up:

*Gooey cinnamon rolls
*Funnel cakes
*Baklava
*Souffls served in individual custard cups
*Cream horns, clairs, St. Joseph's pastries, sfogliatelle, *cannoli, napoleons, baba rum

Straight from the Grocers Shelf
You won't be the first bride to try this. Stack those tiers high and proud or create an entire freestanding "cake" with:

*Sno Balls, Suzy Qs, HoHos, Ding Dongs, Twinkies
*Krispy Kreme donuts, Moon Pies

Other Options
*Chocolate-dipped fruit
*Chocolate truffles
*A chocolate fountain
*Sugar cookies or brownies with your initials in cellophane wrappers
*Fancy pies: key lime, lemon, chocolate pecan, coconut custard, cranberry apple, macadamia nut, peanut butter and white chocolate cream.

Whatever you choose, try to retain the cake-cutting part of your ceremony. The cutting of the cake is an ancient ritual and a powerful symbol of unity between the couple and their guests. It doesn't matter if you're really digging into a lemon meringue pie--your guests will still want to ooh and ahh as you cut it together and feed each other.

Once you've made your selection on "what" to serve...as far as "how" to present it---look for something along these lines as far as a stand/display goes...

You don't have to GET it from here...look around-especially on ebay and I'm sure you'll be able to find something more reasonably priced--these pics are just to give you a visual...

Good luck!

I didnt have a traditional wedding cake. we had just a regular rectangular cake like you would have at a birthday party and it was decorated with wedding things like bells and doves and dont in my wedding colours. as much as you and hubby might not like cake, alot of others do. and its probably your cheapest option. my cake served 60 people and was $25. and you should alway have pastries and other little desserts as well as the cake. if you really dont want a cake though then I suggest a chocolate fountain with various fruits and pound cakes to dip.

We didn't want a wedding cake either. We had a traditional Ukrainian wedding, and had the traditional Ukrainian wedding breads (korovai), which are fancy round braided breads, decorated and arranged in three tiers. The breads and the decorations on them are symbolic.
For desserts, we had a variety of cheesecakes, other plated desserts and a big variety of squares.
We did give out wrapped and decorated traditional fruitcake at donations, for our guests to put under their pillows, to dream up.
However, you could have ANYTHING - even pie. MMM - pie!
