Beliving in God. being a good person is fine and dandy but often times it is the person who decides if they are a good person or not. The definition for good is foggy without some moral compass to guide it.
I am certain Hitler thought he was a good person. I am certain some of the nazis thought he was a good person.
You see without a belief in God and some moral compass you can't really define what a good person is.

If you are a good person then you do possess a certain Godliness. You have a conscience, you neither murder nor steal. You do not covet nor are you jealous. You help those in need. You are respectful, honest, forthright, loyal, well-mannered and so on so forth.
This foundation was laid out long before you were a twinkle in someone's eye...and if this is the stage you walk on, then there is a part of you that accepts the commandments that are Biblically inclined.
You do not have to believe in God, if you are a good person there is a connection to the beliefs of those who do believe, like it or not...

We are taught that believing in god is more important but I suspect that that is just to keep up church/temple memberships.
The only reasonable answer is that being a good person is more important. Consider:
1. If you are a parent do you want your kids to love you or to be good?
2. Bad people could believe in god. Does that make them good?
3. Good people might not believe in god. Does that make them bad?
4. What about a person who believes in god and spends his entire life sitting in front of the TV watching religious programming. Is he good?
Being good wins hands down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about being obedient and learn how to be righteous?
Deu 6:25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these Laws before the Yahweh our Father, as he has commanded us.
Any one can do good. Satan does a good job at what she does. Yahweh only recognize righteousness.
Jdg 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
This is what you are doing people. Don't deceive yourselves.
Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousness [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Isa 64:7 And [there is] none that calleth upon thy name (YAHWEH), that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
Isa 59:2 2 But your own iniquities have separated you from your Father; and your own sins have caused Him to hide His face from you, so He will not listen.

Being a good person, and yeah you can separate good people from bad people. You are a bad person if you kill, abuse others mentally, physically, financially, and emotionally.
Come on, if you don't know what being good is...then you're not a good person 87GN.
Besides I'm not afraid of God or judgment day because I have a clear conscience.

I would think if you are a truly good person you know god, even
if you don't realize it. On the other hand believing in god doesn't
automatically make you a good person.

Being a good person. First off, we may never know if hell exists (but my money's on no), and secondly, if this is the only life, we don't want to ruin it for everyone else.

actions speak louder than words.
Even in the case of the existence of a cosmic hall monitor who judges you later, if you belive in the hall monitor, but you rely on him putting in a good word later without you doing anything decent to earn it, versus never saying a word to him your whole life, but being the best person you can be, I've gotta go with the latter in terms of your "chances" in the theoretical hereafter.

Being a good person - isn't that what life is about anyway?
Hitler, Timothy McVeigh, and Osama bin Laden all believed in God.
