Goin to Australia?

next summer
i will be 17 then
does anyone know if i'll be able to work or will i have to wait until im 18 ?
and what age do you have to be to drive over there ?

Hi Madness !

I live in Cairns and have a 17-year-old son.
You can work from 14 ½ years old here part time of course while still at school, so yes you can work full time if you are not taking part in studies.
You'll need to apply for a tax file number to work - Australian tax office http://www.ato.gov.au

Driving laws has just changed as 1st July. You need to be 16 yrs to get a Learners permit but have to hold that now for 12 months, used to be 6 months, before you can go for your P plates. More info on getting your license go to Qld Transport. http://transport.qld.gov.au
If you already have a Drivers license from what ever country you are in now, you can drive on that for 3 months but then must transfer it to a Qld one (you don't lose your other license though)

Getting work at 17 should be quite easy in the hospitality industry provided you have the right visa. The only thing that might affect your chances of finding work is the fact that you wont be able to sell alcohol until you're 18.

You can get a Learner's Permit to drive when you're 16 in Australia, but in most (if not all) states you need to have a fully liscenced driver in the car with you at all times until you pass your practical driving exam. So, long story short: Yes, you will be able to drive at 17, but you need to find someone to teach you first.

A vast amount of the answer to this question lies in what visa you will have.
If you are coming over on a tourist visa, the answer is a resounding NO. You may not work at all. Full stop, no questions.
If you are coming on a "young persons working visa" then obviously you can work. However, I think the minimum age for that visa is 18 yrs old.
If you are coming as the child of a full working visa holder, then I'm not sure.
If you are the child of an Australian citizen, or resident visa holder, then yes, you can work.

As you can leave home without parental permission at 16, you can certainly work at that age. You might have problems with legal documents such as leases etc unless you have a responsible adult to sign guarantees. 18 brings all the benefits and responsibilities of adulthood. You will be allowed to drive at 17 anywhere in Australia.

HEY!
over here you can get your learners driving permit when you're 16, and then you Probationary license when you're 18. when you're on your learners though you have to have a fully qualified driver with you when ever you drive.
you can get a job when you're 14 and 9 months here too. so you should be fine, although i'm not sure how you would go if you didn't have citizenship.

im half australian but my dad lives in oz and im stuck here lol, i want to see him a couple of years ago you can start working at 16 and driving is either 16 or 17 where about in oz you going?


i went to adelaide you will love it over there though im moving over there soon hopefully

don't know about working over there, but i am sure you can drive at 16..
