I was reading the answers to another question on Mormons...and someone brought up that they disagree with the Book of Mormon because it contradicts the Bible. I would like to know How people see the Book of Mormon (nothing else just the Book of Mormon) contradicts the Bible. Thanks.

Patrone...That is a nice verse..but doesn't say how the Book of Mormon Contradicts the Bible. I would simply refer you to Rev 14:6

Monica...I asked that the answered be limited to contradictions between the Book of Mormon and the Bible. Not your opinions of other teachings.

Kait...so you are saying that the Book of Mormon DOESN'T contradict the Bible?

2007-07-11 10:49:16 · update #3

DVO...obviously many people do. You have the option to ignore the question or not...especially when you see you have nothing of value to the discussion.

norrispenguin...I know that many have specific problems with other teachings of the Church...hence the reason I asked the specific question I did. Your other points are for other discussions. Not this one.

jiloth7...I took a look at the sight. I started reading...and the first sentance that I read was wrong. Completely wrong. Doesn't bode well for the rest of his work. Sorry.

Wizzle... Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I wanted to look at the sites. I would say that 99% of the site has been refuted over and over and over again. The other 1% is something I'm going to look into.

ray_clrk...No offence...but you were all over the place. I'm going to go with the thought that you don't know any better...so I will tell you. The Doctrine and Covenants are a separate book, the Pearl of Great Price is a separate book, Journals of discourse are separate book and not even cannon...the Book of Mormon is a Stand Alone book.

I read the BofM three times by the way.
Here are a couple of my favorites:
We are the temple of God no needs for modern day temples:
1 corinthians 6: 16,19
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
God is our sheild no need for magical underwear:
Ephecians 6:10-18
A man should have one wife, God gave adam one wife and in the ten commandments their was no mention of more then one wife and here are some scripture for the officials of the church in the New Testament as well in Pauls time, notice one of them is capitalized as the position of Bishop:
Titus 1:6
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

1 tim. 3:12
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

1 tim. 3:2
A BISHOP then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
The mormons practise angel worship, there is no need for crosses, they hang the angel Moroni above their temples but the bible warns of this in...
colossians 2:18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

In fact, there is really very little in that the Book of Morman that is doctrinally disagreeable to orthodox Christians. The real meat of Mormonism is found in their other scriptures, The Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. These books, however, Mormons do not hand out at the door - and for good reason. If people knew up front what they were really going to be asked to believe (things such as God once being a man, denial of the Trinity, Satan being Jesus' brother, pre-existence of souls, etc.) they may not be quite so willing to put aside their skepticism.

Well, I see it this way:

The Book of Mormon doesn't really contradict the Bible in any material way (aside from 3 days vs. 3 hours of darkness, other trivial things, etc.). The Book of Mormon, in several instances, was copied straight out of the Bible (Isaiah, Matthew, Amos, etc)

The Book of Mormon DOES, however, contradict the LDS/Mormon theology presented by Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon is actually a lot closer to the Bible and "mainstream" Christianity than it is to actual Mormonism.

BOM: There is one God, composed of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, which are one.
Mormonism: There are many Gods, but we only worship 3.

BOM: God is eternal and unchanging, and has always been God
Mormonism: God is increasing in knowledge and dominion, and was once a man on another planet who attained to Godhood by obeying His God

BOM: Polygamy only permitted "to raise up seed"
Mormonism: Joseph Smith only had children with the first of his 30+ wives; post-menopause widows were also taken as plural wives

BOM: Jesus' spirit spoke to Nephi the night before His birth; His spirit not yet in His body
Mormonism: The spirit enters the body not long after conception, meaning that the fetus is a "living soul".

Go to www.waltermartin.com and examine the articles on Mormonism if you are really interested.

There have been many Mormons who have posed such questions here just to refute what anyone tells them without examining the evidence. If that is your purpose you certainly won't read Dr. Martin's website or accept anything he says.

If you are serious about wanting to know the truth concerning contradictions you will find plenty of answers there. Dr. Matrin is gone to be with the Lord, but in his time was exceptionally knowledgeable about many religious systems and beliefs. He put in over 20,000 hours of study on them if my memory serves me right.

You really have to study the history of the forming of the Bible that we have now. It all came about in the 4th Century at the council of Nicea. Bishops and Scholars came up with a list of books deemed worthy of being in the Holy Bible. For the most part (minus a few books) the Old Testament is in line with the Jewish books. The books of the New testament were selected according to credibility of the authors. Only letters written by the original Apostles, brothers of Jesus and the Apostle Paul were deemed worthy credible and trustworthy. The way I see it is that Joseph Smith and the others that wrote the book of Mormon do not fit this category of credible authors.

Are presupposing a 'contradiction' found in the BoM is reason enough to discredit it? How about: It is a complete fabrication by someone who had the KJV nearly memorized, but also had a vivid imagination. The BoM is dull, boring and tedious, and has none of the poetry found in in the bible - except the verbatim plagiarism of Isaiah. It is also a complete fantasy regarding any of the people described within it's pages; that alone disqualifies it as any type of "truth".

The Book of Mormon does not contradict the Bible in any way. In fact, it is quite the opposite. It supports it and is a second witness to Christ. All throughout the Bible there is mention of Christ visiting "other sheep." He did so, and Christ visited the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. Other scriptures support God's word being written on the stick of Joseph. The Book of Mormon comes form the remnant of Joesph's posterity and again supports the Bible's claims.

The Book of Mormon is another testament of Christ,.

Mormons believe that God was once a man. (Journal of Discourses, Vol II, pg 40)
The Bible says "God is a Spirit..." (John 4:24)

Mormons believe that God the Father has many wives. (The Seer, by Orson Pratt, pg 172) They also believe that God the Father is on a planet near the star Kolob with his wives having spiritual children. (Pearl of Great Price, Abraham 3:9, 16)
The Bible says, "Our Father which art in heaven..." (Matthew 6:9)

The Mormons believe that Satan and Jesus are spirit brothers. (Ensign magazine, December, 1980, p 5)
The Bible says that Jesus is God, the Creator of everything in heaven and earth including Lucifer. (Colossians 1:16-18)

I could go on and on, but there is a specific link that I'm getting all this information from. You should see it: http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0061/0061_01.asp Yes, it is a tract, but consider it an informative booklet.

Let's see...

The Mormons believe that Adam and Eve lived in Missouri, that a bunch of people from the Middle East migrated to America long ago and because the Native Americans, that Jesus and Satan are brothers, and then there's something about Planet Kolob.

I'm not as sure about that last item as some of the others, but Mormon beliefs pretty flatly contradict all known anthropology, as well as the Bible (which is itself a dubious historical source).

Edit: That Mormon mythology contradicts anthropology is not an opinion.
