It depends on what you're looking for. If you like to go fast, a road bike is a very good option. Everything on it is designed for speed, the tires are skinny with low rolling resistance, your position on the bike is also geared to get faster speed.

Mountain bikes if you like to go off road. There are a lot of different bikes here, from cross country (XC) which is riding on 'easy' trails, long distances, and part speed. All mountain, which is doing ups and down. Freeride if you want to do jumps and stunts on the mountain. Downhill to get from the top to the bottom fast through anything.

You have also BMX, which are for bike parks.

So, the best bike depends on what you want to do.

A 10,000 usd road bike will suck as a beater bike to go to the supermarket and do errands, or a mountain bike will be slow and ill fitted for that long ride on paved roads.

look for a bike with 18 gears for all terain single gear bikes are more for tricks shock absorbers will be good for the long run and an aluminum frame offers light weight steel offers durability
I have two bikes I have a Dyno bmx and a mongoose mountain bike so I can take long bike trips with the mongoose or do some stunts with the bmx. It really depends on what you plan to do with the bike if your really into the speed racer type thing mr. bike marathoon every day one of those bikes with the thin wheels that you inflate to 100psi and cost 500 with the ram horn handels would suit you

for durablility and and a good build for jumping and thats not gonna break is definatly a kona scrap or a kona cowan. personally i like the kona scrap better its a 900 doller bike and is the best bike ive ever owned. it has disc breaks and hydrolics u cant go wrong with this bike for sure.

i have a trekk--its got a dual suspension and comes with unlimited lifetime tuneups for about $900, $500 for one with just front suspension (you can barely feel curbs, its made in the usa, and it brakes/handles well on and off road)

don't even think about a department store bike, especially be pacific cycle. i got one from walmart for $220 and it only lasted one season on the trail before the derailers broke. it never stopped well and one time a brake cord snapped when i tried to stop, nearly killing me. also, their customer service is rude and useless. if you can't afford a quality bike, build your own from components------also note the ones sold in department stores like walmart and target may have the name "mongoose" or "schwinn" but they are made by pacific cycle (read the manual or serial code sticker). authentic shwinn and mongose cost about the same as trekk but have less variety and features

I dig huffys. If you get a bike and it looks all nerdy, paint it black and take off the brakes on the handle bars. Or you can just buy a minnie bike. I have a pink spray painted small bike. I do no handers. RTry practicing those to look "hott" on the streets.
