The limitation is how long you intend to remain in the country.
For the typical tourist visa, your UK license should suffice, as the maximum duration of such a visa is 90 days.
However, if you are planning on staying longer, you need to look at one of two options. Either obtain an international license (before coming to Canada) for stays longer than 90 days, or trade your UK license in for one from the province in which you'll be residing (technically, if you're residing in a province for more than 45 days, you're supposed to anyway).
Without either an international or provincial license, you may run into some temporary hardships with the local constabulary if you get pulled over for speeding or another infraction, simply because they may not recognize the document. It isn't going to be a big deal, but it might be awkward at times, particularly in more rural regions.

Your British License is fine. I find this site helpful for tips when visiting Canada. However you have to scroll down pretty far to confirm the license info.

your British license is ok for 90 days, after that if you intend to stay longer and drive, yes you have to get an international driver's license
