I was raised Baptist. My parents weren't hard-core, just your average church-goers. I won't go into them. This is my story. As a child I was perhaps more religiously convicted than any kid I can imagine. I had real, hard-core faith. I truly felt remorse for sinning and had a real relationship with god. Prayer life and all that. I learned from the bible, memorized verses. All the sunday school stuff for sure, but my point is I felt it. For me, god was as real as my parents. I can even remember prayers being answered. Around age 13 I began to guiltily wonder about reincarnation because of a book I had read. Thus began a massive amount of learning and research that is still continuing to this day, and I am 18. I gradually realized that I was no longer a christian at all. I had not lost my faith, but gained a broader perspective and realized that I felt certain other beliefs or ideas to be true, and much of Christianity did not feel right.Today I am religiously independent and rather philosophical. I consider myself proof that you can be a true christian and then leave it behind. As someone who was forced to go to church for all those years between then and now (I just stopped as of turning 18) I can see that most christians do not entertain the possibility that someone could truly make a conscious decision not to participate in christianity any more. Feel free to contact me for more discussion if you are interested.

1. Study study study the Bible. Read it from cover to cover. Memorize whatever jumps out at you. Then read it again, from cover to cover, while praying that God give you wisdom.
2. Begin each day in prayer, with thankfulness. Pray at the end of each day. And pray every time you get a chance in between.
3. Dedicate EVERYTHING to God. Ask Him to show you areas in your life which might need some work. And do that, every single day.
4. Put one day aside each week for rest, meditation, and worship. That can be a Sunday, or any other day of the week.
5. Join a Bible study. If there aren't any good ones nearby, join one online. www.godspeaks.com is a good one, and arcamax sends Bible verses straight to your email, first thing in the morning. I also enjoy www.jesusfreak.com. Pastor Chad sends a newsletter around the first of the month, and they're always wonderful.
6. Have fellowship with other Christians. You can do this at church, or just by having Christian friends over for coffee, or dinner.
I hope some of this helps!

I'm a big fan of baby steps. Pick one thing you can do that would help you in your walk TODAY and decide that you will make that activity a permanent part of your life. Figure out one way that you aren't putting him first, and change that...the rest will follow.
Here's what I did...following a message by my pastor a few weeks ago about the first commandment (titled "Love God First"), I also realized that I had Him on a back burner. I attend an online church so I was to discuss the message with the online pastor and several other people in chat after the service and asked for suggestions. Almost universally, they agreed that starting the day with God was a good place to start!
I decided that I would set my clock 15 minutes early and read the bible for a few minutes first thing every morning. I put my bible beside my bed with a spiral notebook/pen. The next morning, I started reading Acts (NIV version...I can't understand KJV that early *smile*). I was hooked immediately and in the last few weeks I've gotten through revelation and am starting over with "The Message" paraphrase of Acts. I probably learned more about God in the past three weeks than I learned in the last 20 years and I've seen other benefits as well.
Do you forget to pray until bedtime...if so, try making a commitment to pray for five minutes when you wake up every morning...doesn't matter what you pray about, just talk to God. Do you find yourself missing church for all sorts of reasons...maybe you need to commit to putting church attendance first. Only you (and God) know what you need most...ask him to help you focus on one positive change. ...and when you've stuck to it long enough that it has become a habit, pick something else...baby steps honey!!!
I'll say a prayer for you tonight!
Oh, BTW, if you would like the see the sermon I mentioned above, it is available online at http://www.reallifeconnect.org/mediaportal/ ...click "view our videos" and select the link for "Lifeguards part 1" (for me, it starts automatically but you may have to select the link depending on your settings). We also have live online services on Saturday night and Sunday morning...more info available at http://www.reallifeconnect.org.

Don't feel all alone. A whole lot of Christians, don't put the Lord first. Two things I might suggest. Try to be in a spirit of prayer, all day. Thank the Lord in just one sentence, if you need too, for all good things that come your way. If you slip and say something you should not, or even if you think something wrong, immediately ask for forgiveness. You don't have to be on your knees , to pray. I pray on the way to work each morning. I pray when something good happens, or when I see someone, that I think needs my prayers. My mother taught me to pray every time I heard a siren, because someone was in trouble..
The second thing is to memorize scripture. "Thy word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against God."
Repetition is the best way to memorize. Write down on a 3x5 card the scripture you want to remember and refer to many times a day. Do these things, and the Lord will be longer be on the back burner. God Bless You.

The way you increase your love and desire for the Lord is to spend more time with him. Set aside some time every day to read the Bible (even one verse will do), pray, and be silent before the Lord. It doesn't have to be a lot of time, but the more time you spend, the more your desire will grow.
There's really no short cut to getting to know God better. The more you choose to put Jesus first, the easier it will be to put Jesus first.
Best wishes.

Studying scripture every morning has been great for me. It helps me to focus on God's will and prepares me for the day. This can be difficult to do, because it usually means getting up a little earlier in the morning, but it will do wonders for you. I think it is also wise to get into a Bible study a church or with a friend, these types of conversations really help to keep you focused. Oh, huge one here, pray a lot.
Good luck!

You have many good answers here already. I would like to add this though...the words you wrote tell me you recognize it was a choice...it must have been, and made on your part, because God never forces Himself on anyone.
The choice is always there, a daily re-affirmation of our commitment to Him, and His Lordship of our lives.
Involvement daily with Him, finding a service you can do for Him, prayer, all those will help, but take care not to become so busy that you forget Him!
It's an old saying, but so true...people often times get so busy doing the Lord's work, that they forget the Lord OF the work!

Do you pray?
What does it mean to you to be a born again Christian?
God asks us to be like Jesus. Ask yourself, what would Jesus be doing right now?
Pray to be directed to a Bible teaching Church and attend it with all your heart. Don't attend if you want something. Attend to Give God All Glory and to share your God given Spiritual Gifts to your fellow Christians in fellowship with the Church you are to attend.
He made you to Glorify Him...

I love your question- I can only suggest what helped me to put Jesus first in my life, after I became a born again believer- and started to back slide- Don't look to other people for your worth- I did that and God allowed me to find people who did not think much of me, and then I could only go to Him for my worth- spend time alone with Him, telling Him your desire to be on fire for Him- Sometimes in life we need to go back to our first love- and that can be done in many different ways, but I think it starts with you and Him spending quality time together, in prayer and being in His word- and surrounding yourself with people who can help you grow- if you want to talk more please email me- we are all in this journey together.

As soon as you get up in the morning, begin.
After your prayer, dedicate your day to Him. In this way, you ensure that He is near you always, and at times during the day, invite Him into your heart, your family, your home.
For each meal, say a prayer.
After each task, thank God.
I am Catholic, and I usually dedicate to Him through His Holy Mother.
This is the prayer I use. If you don't feel comfortable with it, then by all means, just inviting Him to be with you works.
(Also, read some inspirational books.)
"My Queen, my Mother, I give myself entirely to Thee, and to show my devotion to Thee, I consecrate to Thee this day, my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore good Mother as I am thine own, keep me, guard me, as thy property and possession. Amen."
