And does there have to be evil for there to be good?

What’s good? Wouldn’t I enjoy horseback riding just as much without babies starving in (name the place)? Wouldn’t I get just as much joy out of being in love without there being a war somewhere? Wouldn’t I love to look at flowers, listen to music, and climb Mt Rainer just as much with out evil?
Why does there have to be child rape, genocide, hatred, and any other evil, for there to be love, joy, pleasure and any other good thing or feeling?

In my case the activities that cause me joy are made less enjoyable, Because of my feelings about the bad that's happening.

I totally agree sara
someone asked a similar question a few days back
I said we appreciate things " more " if we have gone through hardships and seen evil
but we do not need one for the other to exist
we can eliminate bad and we would still have good
we perhaps just wouldnt know it as good without a comparison

if you didn't know what was "bad" then how could you have a reference point as to what is "good" You would not know that horseback riding is good or that love felt good because you don't know what feels "good" if there is no what feels "bad" There would be only existance. You would be like a machine with no free will to enjoy good or hate bad (or vice versa for some). God gave us free will and the ability to feel. So we get the whole package. Its all or nothing.

I don't believe it is possible to eliminate one without eliminating the other. All of life exists in a delicate balance. There is an "opposite" for everything in existance. if you were to eliminate the concept of evil, you would, likewise, eliminate the concept of good. So what would be the point?

Personally, I believe in the concept of positive and negative forces (much like a battery or a magnet, neither are "good" or "bad" they are just opposing forces), everything else is just a matter of perspective.

No. Tradition has it Mother Eve paid the price for us to have knowledge of good and evil. It is necessary. Without them, there is no moral judgment. No way to decide what to do and what to avoid. We do not need to personify them as angels and devils necessarily, but we do need to acknowledge the existence of evil in order to fight against it, just as we need to acknowledge the existence of good in order to create it or find it.

Only good can eliminate evil, and God is the only source of anything that is good. So no - the question is impossible.
