My little kitten has either got something in her eye or poked it with something, she normally has bright blue eyes but one is nearly shut and the eye colour looks green, she is still eating and purring, I have rinsed it with water and she has gone to sleep. Any ideas , should I see a vet tonight or shall I see how it is in the morning

well it could be conjunctivitis (feline pink eye). Signs include squinting (which is severe if the cornea has an ulcer or erosion) and mucoid or watery discharge (that can be clear, gray, yellow, green, or a rusty dark red color that looks like dried blood but isn't). For now just take a clean wash cloth and warm water and clean the area. if you think it's pink eye, call your vet asap. as for the blue eye, all kittens are born with blue eyes, their eye color do change. Hope kitty gets better soon!

ps. DO NOT use saline! it is only intended for humans. You can flush the eye out with plain water.

Eye injuries are always something that should get IMMEDIATE vet attention. You shouldn't be rinsing it with water not knowing what is wrong with it - plus water contains lots of chemicals that aren't good for ANYONE'S eyes. If you must use an eye wash, use a saline solution. Please get this kitten to the vet.

As far as the eye colour goes - kittens eyes are always blue when they're born and gradually turn to the colour that they'll be as an adult. The colour change may not have anything to do with the injury - you may just now be noticing that it's changing.

Another FYI - cats even purr when injured - so don't think she's ok just because she was purring. My one cat Todd - dying of cancer - was actually purring when he was being put to sleep.

Get your fuzz ball to the vet! One of my kitties had the same problem several years ago and it turned out that she had somehow got a tiny piece of litter in her eye and it was trapped under the eyelid and scratching the cornea. The vet told me it was a good thing I brought her in when I did, or otherwise she could've suffered possible loss of vision. He flushed the eye with a saline solution and gave me an ointment to put under her eyelid several times a day. Within 2 days she was able to get that eye all the way open again and was just fine. But the important thing is to not procrastinate. Yours could be ok by tomorrow, but then again she may be worse. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

The details you gave aren't really too specific. When you say her eye colour 'looks green', are you saying just that? That her eye colour is green, or does she have green stuff coming out of her eye?
If the colour of her eye is green, that it is nothing to worry about. It is indicating that just as in human babies, her eyes are changing colour to what they will be for the rest of her life.

However, if she is having a green DISCHARGE coming out of her eye, thats a whole different story. It is indicating that there is an infection going on. In addition, the fact that she is keeping one eye shut sounds like something is irritating it.

One of my guys often gets eye infections from rubbing his eye a lot and getting stuff in them. What I do is, I first wipe his eye with a dampened cotton ball and then put 2 drops of "Polysporin Eye & Ear" drops (comes in a small white and green bottle). It is a very general form of drops and will not hurt your kitten. I have treated many cats and kittens this way and it has helped significantly in all of them. If it isn't working, then I know I need stronger medication that only vets can give.

If the kitten's eyes get worse (ie. increased discharge, lots of redness in the whites of the eyes - lift the upper eyelid and look at the white parts) than what you are seeing now, get the vet to check it out.

Hope this helps :)

She either has an eye injury or an eye infection. See your vet tonight or tomorrow morning at the very latest. The vet may give you medicated drops for you to put in her eye a couple of times a day (Tobramycin is a common one).

Sometimes they get allergies or small eyes infections that cause their eyes to matte. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Just get a cloth damped with warm water and undo the matting. If it does clear up in a couple days, look into taking it to the vet if you can afford it.

You should just wait till the morning, and take her to the vet then. If something got in her eye, it might fall out at night. But if it is still there in the morning, take her to the vet as soon as possible.

Keep the eye rinsed with water or try cold tea as this can ward off infections such as conjunctivitis...and call the vet if you're at all concerned.

either way you have to go to the vet.. so why wait?? The doctor will give you some thing to open her eye with. My Cat had the same problem.
