While we were there we had a prayer, sang praises, listened to speakers, and even watched a movie made by the church. Despite all this I didn’t feel the spirit, is something wrong with me?

No, it was actually a movie that looked like it was made back in the 80's making missionary work sound like a wonderful thing.

The Spirit will not abide where there is contention and strife. Admit your activity here to your family and see if you feel the Spirit then.

No, not necessarily.

I imagine I'll probably receive a thumbs down for this from someone, but, maybe you are looking too hard?

The spirit is such a subtle creature; he won't go to lengths which override your own will, reasoning, and feeling. That would defeat his purpose and the plan of salvation. Being able to hear him takes patience, contemplation, awareness of how you feel in other situations, and most of all the willingness to feel the spirit and to accept what you feel (or the answer, regardless of what that answer is). Sometimes absolute quiet and concentration are needed as well.

It may be that you have felt the spirit before, many times, and are so use to the feeling, that you account it for the norm of your everyday. Or because of other people's experiences, you are looking for something fanciful or overpowering. The spirit doesn't always work that way. In fact, it is a rather rare occurrence that the spirit does anything with volume or overwhelming power. There is even the chance that you don't need to feel the spirit because you already have a strong knowledge; you know in your heart what is true and what is not, and no longer require spiritual confirmation or at least not at this time.

Every person will be unique in their experiences and in how they interpret them. But don't think that you are a bad person if you do not end up feeling the spirit.

There are times where you will encounter a trail of faith; a test of waiting to see if you will be diligent in obedience, even when you are not sure or do not immediately feel the spirit. It can also be accounted as the need to understand what you are obeying by living it before you will feel a confirmation from the spirit. And sometimes these trials can be lengthy (but worth it).

Sometimes being able to feel or hear the spirit simply takes practice in quieting our busy, powerful minds, and at other times there are things which are not our fault interfering in our ability to feel it. In the end, I have a feeling that the Lord will understand, and it will all be worked out.

So no worries, okay? You are good person, even if you can't feel it and never do feel it. And you are not the only one to go through this type of experience. You are not alone and you are not weird or broken!

If you are still bothered, you might discuss your concerns with your parents or bishop. They might be able to give you more insight or at least some loving support. And remember that patience is a true virtue and great power. =)

Nothing is wrong with you. Maybe if you were not concentrating so hard to feel the spirit and just open your mind and heart to the spirit around you, the spirit you seek will surprise you. I don't know if being Mormon or Baptist makes much of a difference if you truly seek a spiritual experience. Just open your heat and mind and see what happens. Just beware that there are people out there who take advantage of such religious experiences and use them to control or take advantage of you.

It depends on how you live your life. It can also depend on what you are thinking and feeling -- if you have a lot of animosity toward the church, the spirit may have no way to reach you for your feeling of hate.

The spirit can not force itself on you -- you have to be willing to let it in by your attitudes and actions

The wonderful Jaredites prayed and sang praises to the lord while they didn't 'man their boats' (or navigated) across the Atlantic and god repaid their faithfulness by creating a storm the blew constantly and somehow made a two month voyage last nearly a year long. They could've walked.

Praise God!

NO, You have to pray for enlightenment and encouragement to seek out the truth. The mormans have a good game, but they have never done it for me. Mormans are just another cult and are not guided by the holy spirit. Dont go BAck. They are praising joseph smith more than they do Jesus, so you Know it is wrong!!

If you really want to know God, pray to Him and ask Him to guide you to Him. He'll not let you down.

Go to John 17:3.
