shipped out to Viet Nam? I know he did some Sea Duty but it wasn't much. He could have at least went to the Philippines or somthing

Gomer fighting in Vietnam would have been a serious downer... and that doesn't make for good comedy. Plus if his mistakes would have killed someone, that's not too funny either. Much better to keep him stateside and out of trouble...

They didn't "do" Vietnam back then; wasn't a popular war in Hollywood til the 80's. Besides, at the end of its run, Gomer was singing, remember? Made for some nice pro-war propaganda, that did. But we hippies still didn't buy it!
