Toys-R-Us gift card. Mom can't use it on anything else but something the kid wants/needs cause it's only good at that store, and if there isn't one nearby then they can use it to shop online for something his parents will know he likes. This is a great bet, even if you don't know the kid very well.

Three year olds are just starting to understand money.
Here's what I would get him: a kid's wallet with five ones, four quarters and a few dimes, nickels and pennies.
Plus two or three Matchbox Cars and a book or two. He gets a small variety of things, has some money to buy something he really likes and you've spent less than $20.
Trust me, with little kids, the less money you spend on a gift, the more they will like it.

Play tools. Boys love to pretend to build things. Home Depot has a line of play tools that are great! I always look for these at the toy store when we're going to a boy's birthday, always a big hit. They have individual tools that you can buy, but I have seen a backpack that has about 20 different things in it and it's the best I think. Good luck!

My kids just turned 3 in June. I have a boy and a girl. He is really into Diego, blocks, trucks, dinosaurs and tools. I think if you go with something like this your gift will be a hit. Good luck!!

Not all kids are alike or like to play with the same toys. My son is going to be 3 in sept. I am going to get him a hot wheels three wheel scooter around $40 at toys r us. He likes mr potato head and hot wheels, little people, videos (blues clues, curious george, cars, nemo). And also a lot of toys have ages on them.

To be honest It depends on the child. Educational stuff is good, you could give a gift card but a 3 yr old will not understand that. To be on the safe side.... just let him pick out himself!

Fisher-Price Little People are always good. Fisher-Price also has a dinosaur line that is geared for younger kids around his age. I have girls, but I have yet to meet a 3 yr old boy that does not love dinosaurs.

Thes best gift you could give a child is money for the future... get a savings bond or ask his parents where you can deposit some money for him.. but if you just want to give him a toy get him something educational like leap frog game or something...

Three year olds LOVE cars, so a cool car set or a remote-controlled Monster Truck would fit PERFECTLY. Trust me!
