Traditional religion has become so corrupt that we are forced to find spirituality in other forms

Even if a person lived by spirituality, there are a set of rules, spiritual rules that work whether we know them or not. For example we all reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7-8). This spiritual law works for everyone regardless of spirituality.

There is no such thing as a free spirit. Either we are controled by the spirit of disobedience according to Ephesians 2:1-3 or the Holy Spirit, but either way there are a set of rules that are in effect for each. The people of the world are under the Laws of Moses (Romans 3:19) and Christians by Christ Law (1 Corinthians 9:21, Galatians 5:18) which sets us free from the Law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-4).

Who says that a set of rules and inner spirituality are not compatible? Which rules? Which claim to spirituality?

I am both religious and spiritual. Authentic religion and authentic spirituality come together: the former is the carrier of the latter.

Isn't that the essence of the New Testament?

The OT is, in part, a long list of rules intended to show mankind that we cannot live up to a set of rules. For example, if my eternal destination was determined by my ability to keep the Commandments, then I would have gone to hell multiple times.

The OT was written for the Jews and should be interpreted in that context.

The NT provides the avenue for "spirituality within" or your position before God.

It provides the FREEDOM to live your life as you choose, with your accountability being to God. It is for each of to "work out" what that means in our lives.

I have over-simplified this answer and there is no disrespect to formal religion intended. I am simply articulating the essence of spirituality.

I'm very much the independent, direct experience, don't-tell-me-what-to-think spiritual type ...

but I do know it's possible to have transformative spiritual experience, too, through selflessly engaging in a set pattern of doing things ... it all depends on the "how."

Like there can be set rules in some forms of art ... like a Japanese Tea Ceremony ... where getting "in line" with "the way it's done" can really put you in touch with a spiritual experience.

Traditional religion inspires spirituality, which is felt within. That is what it's there for.

I experienced spirituality then realized the "rules" went along with them, not hindering them.
