How can I help publicise someone doing a BIG charity bike ride?

I'm an ordinary person, not in business or media, how can I quickly get this publicised? There's a website with a "donate here" button but no one seems to know much about it, how can I get it out there? Thanks ! Good cause.

How far ahead of time? If it's less than a month I say newspaper is your best bet by far. Get a third- or half-page ad and include a "next step" in the ad- a coupon to clip, a number to call, a site to visit WITH SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS BEYOND THAT on how to participate.

Work the local angle with the local media. They are always looking for filler space for human interest stories. Do a little web research on how to approach reporters the right way with an angle and a story.

Radio is one way, the smaller local newspapers, the weekly etc.

Also do the flyer in coffeeshops bit, tell your friends etc.

Consider organizing a fundraiser event of some kind - the usual stuff like silent auction or concert or bake sale. If the proceeds are to benefit the charity, then that's the hook. The fact that the donations have your name attached is only interesting to you, not to the donater.

I've seen things like this posted at Starbucks... with a short story of the rider/cause, and a way to donate.
Hope that helps.

Contact local media and see if they will write up the story.
