Hello. I am considering going to culinary school but I was told by someone who used to attend it that you have to taste wine. I don't drink alchohol because of my religion & my health. Can anyone offer me some advice? Is wine tasting a requirement for studying culinary arts? Thanks.

the good news here is that even though you may be required to taste wine as a requirement for culinary school, you are not required (or even expected) to drink it. all you have to do is be able to identify the taste and smell of the wine. you take a small sip, swirl slowly in your mouth to sample to taste, and then spit it out. nothing to it.

I don't think it's a requirement, especially if there are religious or health issues. However, you may wish to explain this before you take the course, and not when you're in the middle of it. If your instructors know about it ahead of time, they will not insist on your doing something that goes against your health or your principles, and this certainly should not have any consequences on your taking or completing the course successfully. Good luck!
