I live in the NYC vicinity and often read questions posted in this area. I read tons about 'affordable' or 'cheap' hotels and just have to ask.
What do visitors think is reasonable, affordable, and/or cheap in NYC?
Do you realize that the local roach motel will easily run you $100-$150 per night?
Do you realize that a 'decent' accomodation is going to cost about $200 per night and up?

I think NYC costs are probably 2 to 3 times as high as other destinations. Is this something that travelers to NYC factor in?

Is it helpful if I recommend a $200+ per night hotel that is clean and - for NYC - reasonably priced?

The point of the question is: do visitors realize that 'cheap' and NYC really don't go together (unless you like sleeping in filth) or do they think those of us in the area have access to a top-secret cheap & clean hotel?
As someone mentioned, a decent place is 275-400, are they looking for the recommendation to the 275 place so they aren't spending 400? Or do they think they can get a room for 100 per night?

I think people who frequent Yahoo Answers have had the fact that NYC is expensive berated into them by now. I no longer really respond to people wanting to know about hotels within a certain price range, because there's Hotels.com or Expedia or Travelocity for that. I generally only respond to questions about specific locations/neighborhoods. Maybe I'm just another "rude" New Yorker...

From a visitor... last yr when planning my nyc trip, i had a hard time finding a hotel that wouldnt cost me an arm and a leg.

I just read that its getting harder to even get a room in NYC..one of the reasons being, some hotels have turned themselves into condos, so now theres less rooms...they need to build more hotels then..

They charge these crazy amounts becuz theres lots of demand and little supply.. they know theyll get 275-400 a night if they ask for it.

For about 110 a night, I stayed in a 'roach motel' my first night there.. I look back on it now and laugh, and i can still smell the pizza from below and hear the subway.lol.

I had better luck my third night, for 155 or so, i had a nicer hotel, nice bathroom...i had searched hard for this bugger, so i was glad it turned out well.lol.

Your hotel will be what costs the most..but you can do food and attractions quite cheaply...the darn hot dog in central park for 2 bucks was one of the best tasting things i had there lol.

I had a great time..it was an experience. It inspired me to give my parents a gift..me and my siblings are sending them to nyc this fall for their anniversary.

I think it is . What we don't know is how many of these folks start in a cheap hotel , quickly realize their mistake and move onto more appropriate lodgings. I think what we should tell these people is that there are a lot of ways and places that they can save money in NYC but a good hotel room is not one of them.
I'm sure that if somebody wrote " Hey guys , I took your advice , i spent $ 75.00 more per night than I intended to but the place is great .The additional $ 375.00 that I spent on the hotel were originally budgeted for other things such as food and entertainment. What can I do to in effect make that loss disappear and still have a great time ? "
With that kind of a question on the table great ideas will come out of the woodwork and the guy will have a blast. We all know that.

i'm with Noble Savage. People asking for cheap hotels in New York are either stupid or lazy. There are websites to do the work for you, not to mention the fact that this question has been answered a million times by us natives and we keep telling them CHEAP and NYC do not coexist.

sigh, i too must be a rude new yorker, lol

Some people are always hopeful that they will find something that is cheaper...sometimes regardless of the quality. I think most people know that NYC is expensive. I'm not sure what the point of this question is.
