We were considering cruising to San Juan, then staying there for a week, then cruising back home - sort of like using the cruise as a flight, only enjoying the cruise days at sea and really not stopping at any other ports. Has anyone done this?

What you want to do is possible and it would take a lot of work by a travel agent or yourself online to find cruises to do it. But it would be very difficult. It would also be very very expensive as you would be booking two cruises for two people, plus the cost of a stay of at least a week in PR. In addition, the cruise is not likely to go directly from the departure port (most likely Miami or Ft Lauderdale) to PR. Its more likely that it will make one or more port stops before it gets there.
If you really want to do this, get an agent to work on it. I am sure any agent would want all of the commission that it would bring; I know I would.

I used to work on cruise ships and there were times when people would join the ship mid-cruise in one of our ports. So I think it is possible.
Seems like what you would want to do is take the cruise to San Juan, stay there for a week, then you'd have to catch the same ship the next week when it again stops in San Juan. This would require you to also do the entire length of the cruise (either after you've stayed in San Juan or before, depending on what point in the cruise the ship docks there.) Perhaps there would be the possibility of catching an altogether different ship from the same company that would be going directly back to the states after its stop in San Juan.
My best advice would be to contact the cruise company you'd like to travel with and let them know your intentions. This is not a normal thing and you may have to pay a bit extra for it, but they may be able to accomodate you.

You can do this...but it's going to be quite expensive. One option is to cruise to San Juan and take a flight back. Depending on the cruise line...a cruise to San Juan will run you close to $1500 (more or less). And that's for one person. They also have transatlantic cruises where you travel from say, New York to Europe and it takes a few weeks. (you can do world cruises too which last a couple months!)

Royal Caribbean has a cruise that leaves from FLorida and ends in San Juan - then does the reverse. You would have to book 2 cruises to do that - but it sure would be FUN!!!!

it is possible, but its pretty difficult to plan and pull off. and it would be really hard to keep the price down.
