There are a lot of people that hide and for no other real reason other than they are cowards.
I know a person who goes into chat rooms and bashes Christians, and Catholics for their beliefs but if he were in the real world he would do no such thing because he is a coward. It is easy to to hide because no-one knows the real identity of the person in which they are. A computer screen is an easy way to start a confrontation that they otherwise could not do in person. Its one thing to "discuss" your faith, and it is another to "attack" another's faith! Most people think that they are right and to me what you believe is what you believe, and it is not up for discussion on any terms!
Who is to say they are right? And who is to say that you are wrong? No-one knows who is right, and no-one knows who is wrong, be proud of your faith and stand tall my friend!

For the same reason many Christians do not defend their faith in person. The computer acts as a shield, a protection for our identities. People are often intimidated by trying to explain their faith in person.

Its very unpersonal. You can't look the person you're comunicating with in the eyes, that makes it much easier for people to say (write) ofensive things. Its pretty much like traffic fights happen

You can e-mail me from my profile any time you like. I hope I am only questioning your faith and not "attacking" it, but will stand by my words when ever you'd like to chat.

Wait a minute...
Are you saying people need to hide from you? Why exactly would they fear you? Do you have intentions of being violent?

I hide my email for privacy reasons.
I discuss my atheism online because societal pressures don't allow me to discuss it offline.
