Why is god referred to as a "he"? Why can't god be a female? I have always wondered this. Maybe since men wrote the bible they made god a male? I just want to know other people's thoughts about god's gender.

Because men wrote all the religious texts.

If women had written them then god would have been portrayed as female.

Since you are gender conscious, consider this... If god was predominately female, why would 'she' allow the Bible to be written in the first place by 'men' and allow 'herself' to be referred to as 'he'?

True that women conceive and give birth, but the last time I heard, an female egg needs to be fertilized by male sperm...(such a mystery in today's society...even an atheist would have to agree with those facts).

Nature is both violent and peaceful, both men and women posses these traits, some men are more peaceful than others and the same can be said about women.

Maybe the less peaceful ones had issues with believing in God in the first place thus resulting in their less than peaceful natures. Maybe the lack of belief in a God is vanity and just might be considered a sin.

Do conceited people annoy you, if so is that a sin or just annoying?

Some natural bias could be the answer as well.

God is male. The Bible says that He created man in is image. Then created woman! He is also referred to as the Father. there is nothing female about that! Men wrote what God told them to write! I know that a lot of women would like it to not be so but it is what it is. I believe what the bible says so therefore God is He!

NO NO NO!!!!! i go to religion classes every week (in order to recieve conformation) and God is called a He for one reason and one reason only. God is a spiritual character. He never lived (((and for that one guy, its not because of his reproductive organs))) God is not a person. He is a being. God is refrenced to as a he, not as a gender, but as a way of stating that he has no gender. He is just the way things are called. for example--

the titantic was called a "she" and "she" was a boat

God is not a man
God is not a woman

God is not any gender.

And all the people with degrading comments. remember, He is the one who determines whether you go to Heaven or Hell.

Sweetie, now you hit the nail on the head. God is not a "he." Divinity is neutral. I prefer to think of it as "she" because Divinity gives and sustains life, just as mothers do. But Divinity also protects us, as fathers so. So Divinity is both male and female. God has no gender. Someday, surf on over or google "Goddess worship" or "female spirituality" and see how many others have answered that same question for themselves and why. I'm delighted that you're thinking for yourself. (I won't tell the traditionalists. They'll come after you.)

Why would God have gender to begin with. Someone pointed out above that "God has a penis." Really? Why would he have one? The purpose of such is reproduction, so that would imply that there is also "Goddess", which, for some reason, the Bible does not mention.

The Holy Bible was only written by men but not inspired by them. It was by God that men who wrote the Bible were inspired by. Men were only instruments used by God for the glory of his Holy Name, So when God revealed himself He revealed as it is written and no man can change the truth which is the word of the most high.

"HE" in Standard English is not just the masculine pronoun but also the common pronoun for not established gender of a word. Most nouns in English are neuter. Gender is not the same as sex:sex is for living beings with a sex and gender is to be used for words which by their nature are inanimate.

The masculine form for most nouns in Standard English is also the common except for duck and goose which are the feminine form

This is a good question and shows your innocents. God is a spirit but He created us in HIS image, with Adam being the first the image is a man. Woman came from man. I too would love to give an argument of why can't He be a woman, but if you believe the bible (like I do) then you know that God is a spirit and because man was first, references will refer to him/he.

ADD ON:
It may be true that the bible was written by men, but remember that it was a Woman that brought forth our Savior

Well, since man was apparently made in God's image, obviously God must have genitalia for some reason (not sure what He uses them for - but that's what a literal interpretation says, so it must be true).

Obviously, someone musta peeked under the robes and seen God's dingleberries, and come to the conclusion that He's a guy.

Either that, or it's based entirely on the preconceived notions of a patriarchal Bronze Age culture that viewed women primarily as chattel.

The dingleberry hypothesis is more amusing, but unfortunately I think the patriarchy explanation is probably more probable.

It can be a he, she, it, cow, sun, Pharaoh, king, Caesar, man, earth, Jupiter, Saturn, aliens, etc... collectively as mankind I think we pretty much covered all the bases.

What haven't we tried worship yet?

Personally I believe that God is all that there is and isn't - but how does that help me in what I am doing is the question I choose to dwell on. This type of belief conveniently covers all bases.
