Are topless beaches wrong? Or are Americans prudes?

Why are Americans such prudes about topless beaches and nude beaches? It doesn't bother me, but in Europe noone cares. In this country we seem to raise our children to be impaired by these images when there is nothing wrong with them. Where does this mentality come from? In the South Seas women go topless as well as Africa.

Yeah I know all about religious freedom and the early Puritans struggle to find a place away from England where they could practice their religion without Richard Lionheart telling them which religion was right and which was wrong. What a joke! I have been to nudist camps in Oklahoma where there were children so there are people who are raising their children to not care and be desensitized to this. A lot of people are so sexually naive that they just see a breast and they freaking want to hump a dog.

I think it comes partly from religion, and partly from society equating all nudity with pornography and sex. In Europe, more people see non-sexual nudity & sex as two different things, so it's okay to have nude or topless beaches and also to have kids there. The more it's kept hidden in the US, the more people learn to associate nudity with something secret, forbidden, or dirty, and thus more people keep it hidden... it's a vicious circle.

In a lot of European countries there is no legal distinction between a topless beach or a non topless beach because going topless is not illegal unlike many places in the United States. But in practice topless sunbathing is less common on the beaches of Europe today than it was in the 80s and 90s

Well yes, the laws state that we are prude, but not everyone in this country thinks like you have described above. You'd be surprised how many people would like to have nude beaches here. People talk about it a lot actually. Not everyone automatically looks at a nude body sexually because we do have minds of our own you know.

Sadly most of the people who go to topless beaches are the hideous kind of people you don't even want to look at when they have clothes on. Other than that yes a lot of Americans are prudes.

The prudish mentality that makes a woman's breast the object of such veneration that they have to be covered up all the time is just ludicrous. Now it's even impossible sometimes for a woman to breastfeed, due to this craziness. Get your minds out of the gutter, stop equating breasts with sexual status symbols, then perhaps many of you will no longer feel the need to artificially inflate them.

Americans are prudes. We have a history of Puritanism and our roots are based in religous fundamentalism.

Basically the puritans left England for the New World so they could be free to be more repressive.

I enjoyed the topless beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida when I was younger--HAHA- You had to go out past the public beach to the military installation property so you wouldn't get bust ed (NPI!) by the local cops... , but it just seems that since the men in America don't get to see "boobies" often and their wives must dress them all up with lace or something, caus they get all excited and just ogle when they see bare ones, making women self-conscious, or otherwise afraid to go to the beaches/ rivers that allow it by themselves.
It sux. Some people are just very modest and yes, prudish.

It`s legal here in Ont Canada, but noone takes advantage of the law. YES NORTH AMERICAN`S ARE PRUDES!!I tan topless arond my pool, if people don`t like it they can turn their face..

And those prudes are ridiculous. They teach others to be ridiculous. They teach them to be ASHAMED of being human!

Nothing is wrong with topless beaches. Something is wrong with messed up Americans.

Its not that Americans are prudes, its the fact that we have to allow all the fattys on the beach at the same time.
