Step 3:
Made a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God as I understood him.
I have been in AA for six years. Your problems don't go away but you are taught how to deal with them.
I believe I am powerless over alcohol and it is my Higher Power who keeps me sober. He is a busy man!
Listen at the meetings -- you don't have to speak. You will learn more that way.
Do go early and stay after so you can become part of the fellowship. That's where you can learn a lot.
E-mail me if you would like to.
Good luck.

In the past I have worked with Alanon and Alateen,
I have worked with teenagers with addiction. I have a son who died at age 21 because of his addictions. He destroyed his heart.
Remind me what step three is?
I do have one objection concerning the 12 step program.
That is the part of about having no control over the addiction.
I believe that a person needs to take accountability for their choices. Poor choices can lead to addictions. Eventually the body craves the source of addictions.
I know a person who said that they stopped their addiction like this......At the moment of desire for the drug or drink, he would tell his brain......ok I will wait until (an example)
two hours on June 25 2008. The brain then tells the body that eventually it will get the drug, even though it is next year.
Then he woud get busy distracting his brain. He would
then get busy with a hobby or activity that didn't have anything to do with his addiction.....examples.....go for a walk, go for a swim. Go to the store. Read,, do a puzzle etc.
Te brain when it desires the drug or drink tells itself that it will eventually get it. Thus, stopping the circle of addiction.
Addiction can kill. And I realize that many addicted people don't care.
You need to change your mind-set. It is wrong to tell your self that if only you had your drug of choice you woulld feel better......change that to.....the reason you feel like crap is because of your addiction and need to get that junk out of your body to feel better. The more you put in your body the worse you will feel. It is time to stop the addiction. You will be amazed how wonderful you will feel once you get your addiction gone.
Please work on the reasons you are addiction. You have the power to change things. There are probably toxic people and toxic situations that bring you down and you turn to your addiction. Hey.....this is your life. You can't change other people but you have the power to change yourself. If that means making totally new friends. do it. If it means you have to move....do it. If it means that all you do it work and sleep and not have friends. Then that is what you have to do.
You can work your way back to a life that is more mannagible
Then you can make new friends and get back to life. But, not with toxic people or toxic situations. You have the power to change. You have more power in side of you than you can imagine!!
You can do it

You know the real beauty about your situation is that you can totally renew yourself now, regain your health and recover all that was lost on you in the years you were addicted. Now is the time to learn about the greatness of life and what it has to offer. Stay away from bad influences and value every minute you have on this planet.
Good luck!

Once you see the addiction doesn't give you what you believed it could, there is no sense continuing with it and you stop.
You just have to observe the addiction process as it happens. Do that once or twice, be honest, & don't judge yourself.
It takes some maturity to be willing to see it, because you're weary of it.

You are the only one who can help yourself. Others can help but it is still your responsibility. Knowledge is important, so learn about the problems you have so you can better understand them and better figure out how you can do something about it. Nicotine is one of the worst. If you really know what you are putting into your body you probably would not want to take things that can rob you of your live and will to live. My doctor told me just quit, and that was the best advice.
