I've been renovating my kitchen and it's Murphy's Law the whole time - cabinets stuck in China, hiring contractors that either didn't show up or did a v. bad job, etc.

A few weeks ago I was at a lunch for work and after being asked about my kitchen I mentioned that I'd just fired contractor number four. A Faculty member (I work at a small school) I know only slightly referred me to his contractor.

This contractor was perfect - did a great job, on time, same price as the estimate, etc. After not having a working kitchen for five months (!) you can imagine how grateful I am to this faculty member for the referral.

I've called to thank him when he first gave me the contractor info. I don't want to be too over the top, but what do you think about sending the faculty member a card and maybe a small gift?

By all means send him a thank you card telling him how much you appreciate his referring you to the contractor. It doesn't have to be gushy or anything, but considering that he literally saved your kitchen from the contractors from hell - I think a card with a hand written note is certainly in order.

Send it to his home, however, so his lovely wife can also bask in the praise.

Really, a nice card with handwritten note is all that's needed - and probably more than expected.

A small gift, or maybe a small lunch in your kitchen. Not sure if it would be improper to have lunch at your house with a faculty member as I am unsure of your position at the school.

As a minimum, I would send a card thanking him again for referring such an excellent contractor.

If you are co-workers, go ahead and send them a card or a small gift, like a gift card. They will appreciate that you think so highly of them and they will feel like the contractor put them in a good light as well by completing the job the way you expected.

If you do, make it VERY small. A nice thank-you note is really more than sufficient.

Give if you can afford if not don't worry about it.
