Spain is absolutely the coolest place to visit in all of Europe. Most people are very nice to tourists, but not as many Spaniards speak English like they do in other European countries. I would suggest a phrase book - unless you are fluent in Spanish. Also, consider your attire. Americans tend to wear a t-shirt, cut-off khaki shorts and flip-flops for touring. That's not always appropriate for going into cathedrals and such. Plus, people in Spain tend to dress up quite a bit when they are out in the evenings. (It's typical to hangout in the streets...) So, look into the culture of the areas you'll be visiting to make sure you don't stick out like a sore thumb.
One thing you won't likely need - an umbrella! The rain in Spain does fall mainly on the plains, but not in the summertime!

Well, of course, all the obvious things (make yourself a list to make certain you take what you NEED), passport, tickets, cash, credit cards, comfy shoes and clothing, swimsuit...Did I say camera? While stationed in Germany, I drove around the Iberrean peninsula, going through Madrid, Seville, Grenada... My wife and I saw an old Roman villa and amphitheater; the Moors stonghold, took a fairy across the Med to Ceuta in Africa...
We went to the alimentaria (grocery store) to buy our food, bought a watermelon a farmer's market and ate it at the beach...
Neither of us know more than a few words of Spanish, but most things you can figure out by comparing the signs to English words.
The main thing is to be cool and mellow and enjoy!

Lots of Euros. The dollar is very weak in Europe and you will likely find food, lodging and entertainment to be more expensive than you are used to. The good news is Spain is an exciting and fascinating and fun place to visit. I hope you have a great trip!

Don't forget the toilet paper! Not all bathrooms in foreign countries have it. Sometimes they charge for it, so be sure to carry around small change. I was once stranded in a bathroom in Madrid without any!
Also: Tums! The food is great, but if you're not used to it your stomach can get upset rather easily.
If you don't speak Spanish, bring a phrase book. Sometimes they get frustrated if you just expect them to speak English, and even if it comes out horribly they greatly appreciate your efforts to communicate in their native language.
And of course, an open mind and sense of adventure. Spain is a wonderful country and I am incredibly jealous of you for going! Have fun!
