Get your GED if you don't already have it and join the Navy. Nobody can stop you in life but yourself. By putting this question on this forum you have shown that you have the desire to achieve - now put that desire into action and go for it. The military will give you something to anchor your entire life on. The starting pay is a lot more than you would get flipping burgers. And you will get an education and training that will give you a path to follow in life. If you don't like it in the military you can get out at the end of your enlistment and do something else in life. But the important thing is that no one can ever take away the things that you learn and earn in the military.

You're 17 and out of school for two years now? Do you have a high school diploma? Here's my recommendation: If you REALLY want to be somebody, go to school and get at least a two year degree. Then, if you want to "join" the Army, you will go in at least as a commissioned officer. You will then be a leader among men, you will be paid better, have been living quaters, have slightly better food and better job responsibilities. Hell, just about anyone can go in at rock bottom. Why start at the bottom?

Explore career options with an advisor at a Community College before you decide. There are a variety of programs and methods of paying available. For instance, you could become an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), a CMA (certified medical technician), welder (very good pay!), veterinary assistant, auto mechanic, pharmacy technician, and more -- the list is really quite interesting!
After you have explored community colleges and what they have to offer, check out the military. By doing it that way, you won't get involved in something you later regret. The real problem with the Army is that you have to be willing to kill people and let people try to kill you. Keep that in mind when you decide, okay?
My brother was a career military man and he liked it, but he never got sent into a war zone. When he got out, though, he didn't have any marketable skills and had to go back to school to get a job as a pharmacy technician.
Also, you can get a GED if you don't already have a diploma and there are a variety of sources you can use to help pay for schooling. Go to Yahoo! search and type in the name of the closest community college to your home and look at the website, then make an appointment with a counsellor.
Quite honestly, there are many ways you can be somebody even if you got off to a rocky start. Good luck to you!

Ask yourself what you like to do the most. First figure out what your strenghts are and do something (a job) that encompasses those strengths. If you don't have the skill set (experience) then get it. You can go to college, go to a vocational or technical or specialty school, or you can go the army. Those are you options.
Just because you have been out of school for two years doesn't mean you can't go back to college?
The army route is a long way to achieve your "be something in life" goals. I have a brother-in-law who took this route and trust me you do a lot of years to get an education. You have to ask yourself if you are willing to put in that many. I wouldn't recommend it.
But not everyone wants to go to college, so they prefer the army because they think they have no other recourse (solution). You have alternatives.
Another alternative is technical or vocational school. It costs less than college, takes alot less time and you become certified in a field you like (since you choose it). Once you are done, you can look for a job once you are certified since now you are skilled in a specific area.
For instance, you can go to school for 1.5 years and get a certification in computers, etc. The most important thing I can say to you is to find out what your passion in life is and what makes you happy, drives you, you enjoy doing and pursue that.
Good luck!

One of the best soldiers I have ever known joined the army when he was 17. If you want it, then go get it. Chances of getting deployed are slimming with congress fighting Bush, and there is a end coming to this conflict soon. But there is always a chance of going to war for your country. Which is why you should be thinking about it anyway. But don't let your age stand in the way if you want to join. There is a recruiter near you that can get you in, I can almost guarantee it.

I think its an excellent opportunity for you to become skilled and make money at the same time.
what the punks that were never in the military dont realize.....is only one in 15o people ever see any combat at all.
I had to volunteer when I was in, Viet Nam was wayyy different
I got 63 dollars every two weeks and 60 bucks a month combat pay..........
the guys now make a lot of money.......if your smart....you will save most of it......use it to buy real estate.......but people being how they are......you will probably spend it on cars women and gambling...then waste the rest
join up pal............be a winner

Sounds like you are really smart if u graduated high school at 15. If you really feel like you want to serve (and possibly die for) your country, then yes join the army. Otherwise I would suggest applying to a college or vocational school (i.e. ITT Tech.) to make something more of yourself
