It has always been the standing of the Church. This is just a reassertment. In the past, although always held as true, it was decide that it would not be asserted. With recent developments within the world and other ecumenical bodies, it was given to separate the Catholic Church from other churches that have drifted away from acceptable practices. It did not go as far as to say that other church are false or that their new doctrine is false. It was only to say, that at this time, the Catholic Church does not recognize these teachings as true and can not endorse them. The Catholic Church through the process of Council's will decide any change of doctrine and will not submit to the whims of the world.
It is in general returning the Church to status of the true intent of the Second Vatican Council.

The point that the Pope is trying to make is that the standpoint of the Catholic Church is the same as it always was.

Here is the full text of the new document that states nothing new: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html

Most Christian denominations believe that each of them is the fullest version of the Church of Christ.

While the Catholic Church also believes that she is "the highest exemplar" of the mystery that is the Church of Christ, she does not claim that non-Catholic Churches are not truly Christian. The Catholic Church teaches:

Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.

Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church.

All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him.

With love in Christ.

U know, considering that the Catholic church professes to be "Formed by Peter [The Rock] ", over the centuries, they have been ANYTHING BUT "ROCK SOLID" and this is but Another Example of Their "Feet of Clay"!!! "Gods Word" DOES NOT CHANGE!!! So...I guess We Must Say then that "Gods Word" is NOT IN THE CATHOLIC church!!! Funny, when U travel abroad & ask about the Customs, Traditions & church practices, U will see all kinds of "Tolerance" in Worship Services!!! One Catholic church "Observance" in Mexico for example goes way back to Conquistador times when the churchs' "Priests" allowed the "Native Indians" to celebrate the "Pagan Worship of the Dead" called "El Dia de Muerte" which still stands & is a church sponsored Celebration throughout N. & S. America!!! But, who knows what will change with this "Papas' Meltdown"??? Next "Papa" may even "Come out of the Closet"!!! Stick with Christ, the "TRUE ROCK"!!! John

Always have been in the "one, true Church."

Most Protestant churches are, too, btw. They are called "separated brethren." They have truth, too, just not the fullness of truth because they reject parts of it, as they are free to do.

"...back to that whole "one, true Church" standpoint"

Back to? When did we ever move away from that? I must have been absent that day in Catechism class.

Since God is supreme happiness it doesn't matter which church claims to be the truth church. The true church is God.

He's really afraid of the huge growth that the evangelical comunity has been having on countries whose majority are christian.

I was really saddened by his statemant. Although i'm not catholic, i think there are some really good stuff about the catholic faith, their tolerance amongst them.... Looks like its not like that after all
