It depends on the 12 year old. Some of them are as tall as the average 16 year old, and have similar calorie needs. Others don't need more than the average 10 year old. You'd have to check with a doctor to know for sure.

For average height and weight, screw 3,000. Most 12 year olds get less excersise than they need that for. 1800 or so.
