I only give them as much information as they need. My 5-year old asked that last year. I told him Mommy has a womb inside her tummy. It's a special place for babies to grow until they're big enough to come out. That was enough for him then.

This year he asked how the babies get in the womb. I told him mommies have eggs and sometimes they get together with a seed from daddies and it grows into a baby. That was all he needed.

Just give him small doses and act casual. We have a book with picture of pre-born babies in the womb. My son is fascinated with these pictures and I will talk about how old the baby is and look at the tiny feet and stuff.

Don't make the mistake of overwhelming him with too much info and don't lie to him.

Good luck.

I told my son that daddy put a baby in my tummy and I have to help it grow. He's 5, so that works for now. If he presses for more I will tell him the truth. There is nothing to be ashamed of, and the more kids know the better off they will be.

My mom is a labor & delivery nurse and she told me the whole truth. No silly stories and no dumbing it down. I have had friends who say they were confused for a long time as kids because a parent said the baby was in their "tummy", or it magically appeared when people are in love, etc etc.

I thank my mom for her blunt honesty to this day.

It's a question all parents will have to answer at some point in parenthood. I just told my daughter that we would tell her when she got older and she seemed to understand.

Your first responder answered this question very good! Tell them the truth, you don't have to get overly graphic, when they are young, they can't comprehend it all anyway.

I would just be truthful, but say it so he/she could understand. Don't let anyone tell them about it. Let them know you can answer any questions they have when they have one.
