It seems like it was a good way to encourage people to recycle. I remember not all that long ago, if you wanted a case of soda you got it in glass bottles with a deposit, when did we stop doing this?

There is no longer any cash incentive in New Jersey because here we are required to recycle paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic (type 1 and 2). If recyclables are found in your trash, the garbage collectors are required to leave your garbage cans as is. Cash for recyclables stopped when it went from voluntary to mandatory.

Recycling is great, but if there is no demand for the recycled product what is the point of spending time and money to recycle more?

I would presume that it is not economical to pursue. Most company will put profit ahead of this green earth. It is called greed.

Beer bottles are nevertheless glass, and that they use the deposit equipment for them in maximum places; yet that still does not provide up them from getting smashed. The 4 super matters i'm able to think of of at the instant with glass are: value of manufacture vs plastic, value of bobbing up particular a reuseable field is clean sufficient to drink from lower back whilst no longer destroying it in the technique (glass threads on bottles), the extra advantageous weight = extra advantageous delivery expenses, and the protection difficulty of broken glass. ok, make that 2 matters: value and protection. solid theory nevertheless, if those matters are addressed.

They still do that in some states. Michigan is one. They also do it in a lot of European countries. They recycle fanatically in Finland, except there they even reuse plastic bottles and cans. They have automated machines at grocery stores and you bring your bottles and cans in (they have to be in good condition) and feed the into the machine, then it prints out a receipt for you and you get that much deducted from your grocery or beer/wine/liquor bill.

I wish we still did that here, it would save a lot of landfill space.
