Silky Terriers were bred from Yorkshire Terriers many years ago. They are considered "cousins". The Silky Terrier also has Australian terrier in it.
Despite being related, they have many differences. One major one is size. Yorkies tend to be smaller in height, weight and length. Silky Terriers are longer then they are tall, usually by an inch or two. Silky Terriers also have a wedge shaped head where as a Yorkie has a flatter more round head. A Silky also has softer and finer hair. When healthy and full-grown they have a "silky" look to them, hence the name.
Personality and temperament are usually similar between the two breeds. As they are both terriers they hold true to terrier characteristics. Both breeds are great dogs and are both very loyal to their family.
Silky Terriers tend to have less heath problems because they are larger then their cousins the Yorkies. Yorkies are usually less than 10 pounds. The females tend to be closer to 5 and the males are usually higher on that scale. Silkies however are usually between 10-15 pounds. Again, the females tend to be smaller then the males.
I have a male Silky Terrier. He is 8 months old and weighs 13 pounds. He had some health issues early in life because of his breeder. She allowed the puppies of his litter to come in contact with a dog infected with parasites. Once that was resolved he has been a very health dog. He loves to eat, play, cuddle and chew.
As with all terriers, they need someone firm for training, especially the males. If the person training isn't firm, male terriers tend to dominate and take over. Once neutered this seems to disappear, as they are calmer.
I hope this helps. If you want more try looking up information about the two breeds. You should also look up pictures of each and compare.

Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are generally smaller than Silky terriers. Yorkies usually weigh between 4 and 9 pounds while a Silky can weigh as much as 15. Silky Terriers are a cross breed (now recognized) between Yorkies and Australian Terriers. Aussies have more wirey hair and yorkies have very fine hair. So, they inherited a mixed hair that isn't as fine, but silky and a middle size between the two. Both breeds are very anxious though. They have a very strong attachment factor too. I hope this helps.
