I just got a new puppy. Taking him to the vet on Friday, but I have a question....?

How old does your pup have to be before you can put him on heartworm meds? (I haven't had a puppy in years)

You can start as early as 6 weeks but it's not recommended until 10 weeks, when the puppy's immune system has had time to fully develop and is no longer dependent on mom's milk.

My puppy started at about 10 weeks because she had giardia when I got her so she had to go through a three day de-wormer treatment and then be checked again to make sure they were gone but right after that she went onto heartworm. The answer is right away she will go on them. Be sure to check your dogs weight every month to make sure that the dog isn't getting to big for the dose they are getting.

I have previously worked at 2 veterinary offices, and both vets started heartworm preventative at 12 weeks. Especially if it is the spring/summer and mosquitos are more prevalent during the warmer months.

While they are nursing, my puppies receive some heartworm protection from their mothers (who all receive a regular preventative treatment). I will start them on their own medication at 6-8 weeks old, depending on when they stop nursing.

i brought my dog to the vet at 8 weeks and they started him right away your vet probably will to especially since it is summer and they get heart worms from mosquitoes
