I know you need a passport if traveling by air back to the US but if I travel back by land I should be ok without one? Do I need one to enter Canada by air?

You need a passport to fly. With the rules, the airline checks your passport at check in. You wont get anywhere near Canadian Customs without one. But you are in luck, they have downgraded the requirements for the summer. You only need proof that you have applied for a passport to fly, then along with the identification you have listed.
