I know a few people that are able to IM straight from their desktop...do you have to have an AOL account for this?

Try this http://www.aim.com/aimexpress.adp its web based so you don't need to load software but you will need a AIM account

There are also other programs if your not a fan of AOLs or like using AOL Web AIM.

no you don't need an AOL account
all you need to do is go to
aimexpress.aim.com
you can use the program without downloading it

AIM express works from a standard browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer.

You have to download the Instant Messenger onto your pc to do this and you need an Instant Messenger account as well.
