I would take a refreshing fruit salad in a watermelon bowl. It is healthy, refreshing, and tastes good.

Get a large watermelon, cantaloupe, musk melon, apples, peaches, oranges, any fruit in season.

Make the bowl by cutting into the watermelon from the top, scoop out the insides to the pink before the white of the rind.

I don't like to make melon balls, so I chunk my melons. The chunks should ALWAYS be bite sized. Slice the apples and peaches, also making them bite sized. Oranges should be peeled and sectioned. I cut each section in half. I put the salad in a large bowl to mix, I drizzle with lemon juice.

Chill the salad and bowl until it is time to leave for the BBQ, put the salad into the watermelon bowl, and garnish with sprigs of fresh mint. If you grow your own, put a sprig of each kind you grow.

I would ask the person throwing the BBQ if there was something they needed and if they say no.... You can't beat alcohol. Unless it is a bbq for a recovering alcoholic. Then I would bring some type of food item ie, potato salad, or some type of salad type thing.

Well first off I would call and ask the person having it if they need anything else and see what they would like me to bring if I couldn't get hold of someone then I would bring whatever I thought to be appropriate.

Caprese salad. It's quick easy and good! Slice fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. Chop fresh basil add to the top of the salad. Season with salt, pepper and olive oil. Enjoy!

Pants with an elastic waist.
As far as food or gift, depends on the type of barbecue and attendees.
A pie or two for conservative, otherwise beer or sodas.
