First number is the potential winnings, second is the amount of the bet. So, 7/2 means if you bet $2 and you win, you'll get $7 in winnings (plus your original $2 back).

in the case of 9/2 odds, for every $2 you spend, you would win a total of $9... spend $4 and get $18 and so on...

7/2 would give you $7 for each $2 dollars spent.

when you see just single or double digit numbers, those are /1 instead of /2.

at the track, the bigger the number on the right, the more it will cost you to win.
