First i would not buy a Home Theater In A Box. The compromise in sound quality is too great. If you are serious about surround sound there is only one way to go and that is to buy separate components.Get the best Receiver and DVD Player you can afford(unless you already have a good one) .DVD Players all sound different.Which is hard for some people to grasp. If "The Answer Man " sees this he will say i am "spouting complete and utter nonsense" but there are web sites to back me up.If you have made your mind up and you want a Home Theater In A Box (HTIB) then i can't advise you anymore.

I think it all depends ... how big is your current tv set? Mine was 27" so I went with the home theater, surround sound first so that I could watch my DVD's and enjoy surround sound. Only recently did I pick up my 42" panasonic plasma HDTV because the prices had come down. If you've got a tiny tv, you might want to step up to HDTV first, then get your home theater in a box later.
BTW ... my set has an ATSC tuner so I get my HD signal "off the air". I decided I wasn't about to pay the cable company $$$$ to get HD from them.
