This is the war on terror. We are at war with countries that support terror. When you have a country ruled by someone like Saddam Hussein, that is a country that supports terror. This is not the 9/11 war. This is a war to eliminate dangers to the United States. People aren't telling themselved fighting Iraqis is good to make them feel better. Fighting terrorists is right because you can't just sit back and hope you go unnoticed by the bad guys all of the time. You have to stand up and defend yourself. That is what we are doing. We are telling Iraq that we won't tolerate money being given to Taliban or militant Islamic people. And, no, maybe all of the plane fliers were from different countries other than Iraq. But if they were being aided in any way by terrorists living in Iraq than Iraq chose what side of the war it was on.

I don't know anybody who thinks Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. Colin Powell said in his speech to the UN General Assembly, before the war, that there was no known link between the 9/11 attack and Saddam Hussein's regime. President Bush repeatedly stated the same thing. The war was initiated because of the 17 broken UN resolutions that nobody was doing anything about and the apparent hiding of WMD in the country by Saddam's goons. Not to mention the foiled assassination attempt on Bush Sr. in Kuwait after the first war (that act by itself was grounds for war). The only place I've ever heard from people who think Iraq was involved in 9/11 is in this forum.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Lebanon, IIRC.

Only in the broader sense of Islamism are those who make common cause with the 9/11 attackers in Iraq - and, even many of those are foreigners. Saddam's Iraq was a Fascist state founded on Arab Nationalism, not Islamism - a bit of an anachronism, really.

Of course, the US had long been criticised for supporting, or not deposing, Saddam, so, while it was hardly justified by 9/11, his removal was also arguably long overdue.

Rose, it appears by the responses, that most don't believe it was about 9/11.
The original war in Iraq (2003) was about broken UN resolutions agreed to in the cease fire from the previous "Desert Storm"
Additional to that was the fact that Jordanian and Egyptian intelligence as well as those of many western governments believed he had WMD.
Further, he had been shooting at our planes for a decade and attempted an assassination of one of our presidents.
Further he had been torturing and killing tens of thousands of his citizens and his sons were raping and killing women.

Now that we've established why we went in as well as other reasons that he should be deposed (and no the Iraqi people didn't have the means to do so by themselves), why are we there now and why do some people get confused, like you mentioned.

That's much simpler: Al-Qaeda is in Iraq and killing tens of thousands of Iraqi muslims.
Their near term goal is to wait out the American public's attention and patience and then to establish an Al-Qaeda caliphate in Baghdad.

Because we are fighting Al-Qaeda there, some may confuse the original mission with the current mission.

The cost of winning will be great.
The cost of failure would be devastating.

Oh wow is this wrong. ok iraq didnt have anything to do with 911. soudi arabia had nothing to do with it. IT WAS TERRORISTS. terrorists live everywhere. they live in afghanistan, iraq, soudi arabia, etc. I dont know why people get on here and claim everyone is so stupid for thinking iraq was involved when they dont even see that this is a war onTERROR!! NOT iraq.

If you really want to know, review the old news clippings of Bush and his cabinet, when they made speech after speech. They mentioned the two separate ideas as one, and left it to the people to draw their own conclusions. They hinted that Iraq was involved, however, if you listen to what they said, their stories changed from day to day, until after the war started, and they didn't say there was any connection, but by then, it was too late.

Who believes that? Not anyone with a knowledge of the subject. The bases of operation and training were in Afghanistan, which is why we went there first.

They don't believe it happened by the people there, there were some that originated there, they trained there, had meetings there, and were in corroboration with the Iraqi Govt. there.
