P-38 Lightning

Messersm. Bf 109.... 6 of their aces had over 200 kills. One of them, Erich Hartmann, destroyed 352 Russian planes. They flew, and racked up staggeringly high scores over North Africa, France, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, Poland, and, in the end, Germany itself. Two hundred aerial victories each. By comparison, the top U.S. aces of World War Two achieved twenty or more.

The P-Mustang was a better plane as well as the German Jets, but in overall kills, the 109 was superior. This is a hard question when it comes to comparing fighters, theGerman had a "fly till you die" policy, while the American rotated their pilots out after so many missions.

The P-38 Lightning brought the Zero to it's knees
but
The F4 Corsair was the finest plane the Allies came up with...

I don't know...
I love the Supermarine Spitfire because...it is the Spitfire.

I love the B-17 because...it is the flying fortress ! the American bomber who destroyed the german war machine !

I love the P-51 Mustang because...it is the Cadillac of the skies in Europe.

And definitely, my favorite is the P-51H Mustang. It never saw combat and I wonder how it would have been against a late-designed german figther such as the Ta-152.

The F6F Hellcat, It has the best kill ratio (19:1) out of any fighter of any country in the history of aviation. Like Brian K said, it accounted for about 75% of all kills in the pacific, a little over 5,000 I believe.

For looks I like the F4U Corsair, that gull wing is so cool. For operational success it's got to be the F6F Hellcat. The hellcat accounted for 75% of the kills in the pacific theater.
