I'd say slow down the relationship. Don't call him as often, don't return his calls right away. Let him see there is a little rift in your relationship. Then, sit him down and explain that it's just not working out. Perhaps he'll put the decrease in phone calls and the breakup together, and it will be less of a shock.
I won't string him along for too long though. Maybe a week and then dump him.
